My Action for the Exhibition!

For the Exhibition taking action is a part of the Inquiry Cycle by Kathy Murdock, in the Exhibition we follow that. The purpose of doing action for the Exhibition is to show your learning in the Exhibition. I have decided to use my teacher’s idea which is to make a card for my domestic helper, since my area of investigation is about labor movement. That was an idea that I had before one of the PYP coordinator talked to us today about action. After the PYP coordinator Mr. Woods showed and explained a presentation, I changed my idea on my action. My action is to help my helper whenever I can and also make a thank you card for her.

I will start helping my helper whenever I can and I will finish my card for her today and so I can give it to her tomorrow. The reason I am doing this is because I want to do something nice to my helper for what she has done all those years and also because I want to show people what types of action even children can take to help labor movements anywhere in the world.

Mr. Woods gave us a picture of this ladder of participation. Here is the picture of the ladder of participation.

I think that the action I am doing is at level 6 which is: ‘Adult initiated shared decisions with children.’ because this idea was given from my teacher and I thought it was a good idea so I went with that idea and did it without any help.

Exhibition!

Here is a reflection that I wrote in my process journal for the exhibition!

Before researching on labor movements I barely knew much about this topic. All I knew were a few subjects related to labor movements, such as child labor and labor unions. After a lot of researching, I now know a lot more than just issues in labor movements. From the research that has been done, I have learnt how factory workers are treated, their working conditions and about how some people have helped them overcome these problems.

Many labor workers were beaten in the past and easily injured; some were even killed by their owners. The working conditions in the past were very poor because the labor workers had to from from day to night, given little and non-nutritious food and poor shelter. I learnt that some labor workers (called mill girls) were given the opportunity to read in libraries and eat healthier foods than other labor workers. Many people have helped labor workers to receive fairer wages and better working conditions. People such as Cesar Chavez,  Dolores Huerta (founder of the National Farm Association) and Harriet Tubman (the famous railroad conductor) are all people that have helped significantly.

I learnt a lot during the finding out process because I was able to research in more detail about my topic. I learnt many new and interesting improvements that have been made in the labor force, such as better working conditions and enough food for labor workers. Another fact that I found interesting was that not all albor works are treated in bad ways, such as the mill girls. I am happy to have picked to research about the topic of American labor movements because I was able to learn more about the changes from America’s past to present in the labor force, and can share my knowledge with others.

I hope that you guys understand my topic! See you guys next week!

Questions from Mr. Steiner (Our P.E. Teacher)

What does sportsmanship mean to you/look like to you? Give some examples.

Sportmanship looks like people supporting each other saying good job and working cooperatively.

Why is it important to follow the rules of a game?

It is important to follow the rules of games because if you don’t follow the rules you will get hurt and the game will be unfair to others.

Why are good team strategies important to success in team games? Give examples of strategies for team handball?  How would you create and/or deny space in team handball?

Good team strategies are important to success in team games because you can win and you feel comfortable in games without struggling. One good strategy for handball is that you create space and throw to people that are in the open space. I would back up to create space and for denying space I would clump up with a group of people with the ball.

What is a strategy you/your team used in “Capture the Flag” to be more successful?

A strategy that me and my team use in ‘Capture the Flag’ is to draw attention to yourself while others go and get the rugby balls and help other teammates get out of jail.

Describe why having strong skills helps your team be more successful? Give some examples of skills with a specific team sport in mind.

Having strong skills are important so you can do things accurately. For example in team handball you have to learn how to throw the ball far to your teammate when your compettitor is blocking you.

Why does a team that is very physically fit have an advantage over a team that is not fit?

The team that is phyisically fit has an advantage because they cannot run as fast as you and they can’t chase up with you.

Weekly Reflection January 25th 2013

We had a fun week! Our artist in residence Steve Stiler came to our class and taught us how to read the beat on a song sheet. He used a song called ‘1e+a’. We used 3 blue wooden sticks to create a beat. One of the sticks were on our lap and the other 2 were in our hands. I really liked the music class with Steve Stiler, he brings lots of joy and laughter in to the room. The class went by so quickly and I was sad that it was over already.

Today, we had French with our new teacher Madame Maria. We had to create a a Keynote presentation about our family. We are going to present it soon. In class, since I finished my presentation I went to help people that were sick the other day and didn’t know what to do. In French, I enjoyed helping people to catch up with their work.

Next week is going to be so fun! We have the Chinese New Year festival that goes on for 3 days and we get to wear Chinese clothing on those 3 days! Can’t wait till next week!

Book Reviews

I recently read a book called Glitter Girls and the Great Fake Out by Meg Cabot. It is also part of the Allie Finkle’s Rules for Girls series. It is about Allie going with her friends to one of her friend Erica’s sister Missy’s Twriltacular baton competion but later on her mom says she has to go to Brittany Hauser’s birthday party on the same day as the competition. After she hears that in the party they will be able to ride in a stretch limo, go to Glitterati and stay in the Hilton hotel, she decides then going to Missy’s Twrilacutar competition. She doesn’t want her friends to know why she chose to goto the party instead of going to cheer for Missy perform so she made up a lie that if she doesn’t go to the party Allie’s mom will lose her position in the show Good News!

The party wasn’t as good as she thought it would be. All the girls apart from her ex-best friend Courtney decides to prank her when she is sleeping. They feel sad that they don’t get to prank her because she’s leaving. She pretended to be sick and called her babysitter since her parents are at a wedding to go get her, but he couldn’t so he called his girlfriend Harmony to go get Allie. After the talk with Harmony she feels bad so when she got home she went to call her best friend Erica to explain everything and say that she was sorry. Erica sad that Missy is going to the finals so she promised she’d go watch.

It was a really great book, so I recommend that you read this book, I also learnt many rules and lessons from Allie. I hope to read other books from Allie’s series and write more reviews.

Bye for now! See you next time!

Weekly Reflection January 18th

This week was pretty fun! This week was Friday. On Friday, we didn’t have Chinese. I also got nominated for being a risk taker in a Unit of Inquiry activity. Besides me getting nominated part of the nominations went to the other central idea judges, Russell, Sara, Carolyn and Ian.

I am still wondering who nominated me but I felt really happy because I have been wanting to be nominated for an award for a long time. On Friday, we also got our CAMS test results back. I got  7 strengths and 9 need improvements. I also had another test which is the line graph test. I got everything perfect apart from forgetting to write the title for the graph I had to do. I don’t have to do it again!

I had such a fun week at school! For the next week, our Artist in Residence Steve Stiler is coming into our Performing Arts class to help us with our instruments test where we have to play a piece. I can’t wait until next week!

It’s a new year!

This week was really fun! We had 2 guests come to our school! Steve Stiler our artist in residence came to our school to perform in the LLAC. Ms. Lai a Toronto teacher came to our classroom 6A to read us a book called the Sybil Snake by Sarah Brennan.

Steve Stiler used 3 instruments to perform 2 xylphone like instruments and a drum set. I like his music because it is very upbeat! Ms. Lai came in to read us the Sybil Snake, she was a really nice teacher! Since she read us the book, in return we danced Witch Doctor for her!

This was the funnest week ever! Many guests came to our school to perform to us! I thank Steve Stiler and Ms. Lai for spending there time to come in and do something for us!

See you next week!

Weekly Reflection December 7th 2012

This week’s PE was really fun because we really fun because we played my favourite game ” Capture the Flag” I was on a team with my good friends. I think that I did a pretty good job on chasing invaders but I think that I could have done a much better job on helping people get out of prison. I didn’t have the guts to cross the border between the two teams shirts and color I tried once but I got caught and ended up in jail for the rest of the game. So we lost in that match because David and Rachel were both stuck in jail with the others.

I can’t wait till next PE lesson so I could try running across the field to get the rugby balls without getting caught. I had a  fun week doing PE and other classes. Can’t wait till next PE class which is on Monday!

Grade 6 Camp Reflection

Today we just got back from camp in Zhaoqing which is in China! My roomate was Charlotte aka Stargirl you should check out her blog. I was in the orange group like lst year. We got to stay in a 5 star hotel called “Nine Dragon”. Everyday we had different activities such as Paper making and Cableway hiking.

My favourite activity is the paper making. In paper making we had to rip up smalll squares of recycled paper and soak them in water for about an hour and we had to add glue so that the bits of paper can stick together. While the paper was soaking in the wate and glue mixture, we went to a bamboo paper making factory. They use baboo paper and one stack odf paper takes one whole year to create. They use bamboo paper to make fake money to burn to their loved ones that have past away or to the god and also they use this typoe of bamboo paper for chinese calligraphy.

I had a great time in camp this week. Thank you to the Deragonfly staff. The non-fun parts were when I was hiking, the rocks were very slippery and I almost fell onto the river. My friend fell in the water and got half of his body wet and that happened twice! By the way I had a great time withh the Dragonfly staff, teachers and with my friends. Can’t wait till next years camp!

Weekly Reflection

Hi everybody!!

This week was like any other week except we had Remembrance Day. I am in the choir, so I had to sing in the Remembrance Ceremony. The Junior Choir lead by grade 6E Ms. Kinsinger sang 3 songs: The Canadian National Anthem, Chinese National Anthem and “Ordinary Miracle“.

Remembrance Day is a day when we reflect about the people that scarified there lives to fight in the war for us. Everybody has to wear a poppy on this specific day.  People wear a poppy because most battlefields grew many poppy, so that is why. On this day, people also fold paper cranes, because paper cranes are a symbol of peace.

I think this week was pretty fun, as usual. I hope that you guys had a fun week too!

Bye for now.

Weekly Reflection # 9

This week was really fun! At school, every single week we have a math challenge. Ms Manson will put our name on the wall of fame. Which is simply a laminated piece of paper. I personally think that Ms Manson should put a red curtain as the background with the words “Wall of Fame” in gold. If you do 2 or more challenges, you get a tally beside your name. You even get a ”rosette”. I am so closeto getting one more rosette until I get a certificate. Ms Manson said that when we get 5 rosettes she will give a certificate and be awarded at the assembly.

This week we also had a fun group activity. My group members are David, Nicolas and Me! My group and I have to create a poster about the elements and principles of a specific type of art form, such as music. We had to add the elements, priciples, history and examples or pictures of music that are related. Me and my group had a few arguments about the color of the poster and which picture to put on the poster. So to solve it, we just chose a music colr which is black and stuck with that. Today we had to present our poster to the class. When other group members were talking, I was so nervous while waiting for my turn to speak.

Today my BFF got nominated for taking the initative to add extra information to her journal. Guess who voted for her? That’s me. Congradulations Natalie! I had a really fun week in and out of class. Saturday is the start of my Mid – Term break in Thailand. Yay!

Weekly Reflection #8

This week was really fun because we had my favourite basketball game in P.E. We played this game called Sideline Basketball. In total there were 4 teams, my team mates were Carolyn, Lizzie, Russell and David. The game is the same as a regular basketball game but instead when 2 teams( blue and red) are playing the other two stand behind the side line and whenever they do not know who to pass to they can pass the ball to them. So for example if the blue and purple teams are playing, the red team and the shirts team are on the sideline helping either the blue team or the purple team. The bad thing about tis game is that you have to pass the ball to a person before you can shoot a goal.

This week we also did a few tests that were called ISA tests. Many international schools all over the world also did it. The whole grade 6 did it at almost the exact same time. On Tuesday, we did part 1 of the writing test and the part 1 of the math test. Today we did writing and part 2 of the math test . Tomorrow we still have to do the reading comprehension test. For each test, we had about 30-40 minutes to finish it. You know what? It takes 3 months just to get the results back!

I had such a fun week doing P.E and the I.S.A tests because even though I don’t like tests that much I thought it was very simple and I did not have to go to Chinese class!

Seventh Week of School !!!!

Hey guys!!! It’s Atom 10 here!!!

This week was really fun! The best about this week was that Ms. Manson came to our classroom and hande out awards for the Weekly Math Challenge. Guess who won, I did! Most of the people thaat won the Math Challenges were in my class such as me and my friends in my class. Their was only one person in another class which I don’t know who it is. The best part is that I got 2 awards, I stuck them on my room door.

Today which is the last of this week, I made a poster about the results that I got in a survey that I created with my friend Atom 16. I had to create 2 differnt types of graphes, create a title and write a conclusion. I only had 14 people who replyed and answered my survey, which is sad. I sent it to the all the lower school teachers, some of them did not answer.

I had such a fun week! Next week we get to do a new unit about art and we have to learn the pricincipals of art. Art is my favourite subject. I hope youguys also had a fun week at school, like I did!

Bye for now!!!

Ties that Bind, Ties that Break

I recently read this book called Ties that Bind, Ties that Break. It is about a Chinese girl named Ailin. It also is mainly talking about a chinese culture called foot binding. You use silk made of silkworms then you wrap it around your foot very tightly so that your feet can fit into very small shoes. It shows other chinese families that you are wealthy and does not have to do any house work. Most families with a young boy would want to marry girls with bound feet. They arrange their engaments at a pretty young age. Now that’s enough of talking about the book. Ailin does not want to bind her feet because she has seen the sight of bound feet of her “Second Sister”. What I really am making this blog post is for writing my connections and more about my understandings of Ties that Bind, Ties that Break.

Yes, I can make connections with the attributes and attitudes. One of my connections that I can make with the book is that I have exprienced doing things that I don’t want to do that my parents would like me to do. Another one of my connections that I can make with the book is that my relatives or a friend getting in trouble because of me. I also have lost a chance of doing something I liked because of me getting in trouble.

Connections with the attributes and attitudes =

1. Empathy = When one of my friends or any others of my classmates got hurt in PE, I would ask them how they feel and also would           suggest  going to the nurse or going to the toilet to help them wash the cut or wound.

2. Open-Minded = Whenever I get critisized I rarely say something to that person, I would just not say anything to that person.

3. Independence = After school, when I get off the bus I don’t have a parent or helper or any guardian waiting for me after school.

4. Reflective = On the bus after school, I always think about the things that I am supposed to bring home. In my head there is a checklist, I use it to see if I have left anything at school.

Thank you everybody for visiting my blog and reading this post. I hope you go to a library or your local book shop to buy or borrow this book.

Bye For Now!!!

Week #6!!!!

This week was really fun because we did many fun things such as practicing the assembly and making a survey. The teacher let us choose our own topic such as your favourite genre of books or your favourite lunches.

For the assembly, we had to think of things or videos that we could show to the grade 5s and 6s. Here is a list of main acts we thought of :

- A scales video

- A song called : Atoms Family

- A values video

My class also has to cooperate with another class in grade 5 because they will also be hosting the assembly. My class’ MC is Atom #16 and I am not really sure who the other class’ MC is. For each class there can only be one MC, and I really wish that I would be a MC too. Last year, I was the MC because my teacher thought that I was very shy girl and wanted to give me a chance to speak in front of an audience . This year, I felt disappointed that I was not chosen to be a MC.. I feel very frustrated but I know that it is a very hard job because I have tried it before. The best part is that it is on my most favourite day of the week Friday and it is also Dress Down Day. Usually, that day is when I get to wear anything that I want. But this time , classroom teacher decided to make a theme for my class, and we have to wear bright colors or spotted clothes. I am going to going to wear my favourite Hollister shirt. This week my math teacher is going to give me a math award for doing a math challenge. I wonder when she will give the award to me, hopefully during the assembly!

I had a really fun week because  so many fun things happened. This week was a blast and I really can’t wait . By the way, I want to improve my reflections, so could you help me by learning some comments. Please type all your comments in the comment box.

P.S. Whoever visited my blog is AWESOME!!

My Fourth Week of School

Hey Guys!

This week was awesome, I mean, seriously! We got to do my favourite subject art. Yipee! We had to find a picture that represents conflict. I took a picture of  a triangle over an circle. I know that you are thinking what do I mean? Well, I will show you. Here it is:

Then we had to print it out in black and white  and use oil pastels to color it in. I used warm colors such as yellow, red, orange and brown. I used all of the possible warm colors. I have already finished. I have used some colors that represents angry.

We also had a PYP coodrinater come to our classroom talk to us about the PYP. Her name is Mrs. Doolette Cox also called Mrs. D.C.  She explained to us about the PYP. Now I understand more about the PYP.

I learnt a lot this week, I can’t wait till next week!

My 3rd Week of School!

The 3rd week of school was really fun! Many interesting things that happened , such as re-imaging our computers and we learnt about integers in math class.

During this week some people from the I.T department helped us re-image our computers. Before they took our computers we had to drag all our files onto a USB hard drive. On my first try it did not work because my hard drive was full and it had a special format on my hard drive. So I had to trash everything on my USB hard drive and do it again but it still did not work so the I.T department told me to buy a new one. I went to buy a new one right after school. The next day I went to school early and tried again. Guess what? It worked! Yipee! Then in class they took away our computers. We said bye bye to our computers. At lunch time, they gave our computers back to us.

My favorite part of this week was math class. Usually I do not like math that much but the good thing about math class is the teacher. She is a very nice teacher and she even reads us very funny stories about math. She lets us draw in our journal and create our own math problems. We started learning about our new math unit this week. It is all about integers which I did not understand last week.

That is the end of my fun week. I love when we have math class because we just learnt something new. I also love my new updated computer and I can’t wait till the next week of school. Check my blog often , I will update my blog every week or so. Bye for now!

My 2nd Week of School!!

Hey guys, it is the second week of school for me!!!

On our second week of school, we went to our different classes and did our homework. On the second week, my water bottle holder that I made on the first week was very sucessful. My water bottle holder did not fall down at all! Now I know how to keep it up. On the first week everybody got used to the new schedule. I am much better but I still need to work on the schedule a little bit more because sometimes I am late for class. The water bottle holder because nobody was disturbed by my water bottle. We all went to music class, physical education and Chinese class. On the second week there were some major things that happened.  We had our 12 minute run and beep test. On the 12 minute run we had to run for 12 minutes and tried to run as many laps as we could. In the 12 minute run the teacher separated the whole class in half and the second person has to record the first person’s scores. My partner was Atom 14, she recorded my score and my score was 221/2 laps and my friends score was 24 laps. We also had our beep test . We had to run as much as we could between the beeps which is why it is called the beep test.   We started to learn about our new unit Who We Are which is about values and conflict. One thing was that we had a few guest speakers come to talk to us about their values . While they were talking and presenting their values, we jotted down some notes in our notebooks to remember what they had said. All of the speakers were teachers that were working in our school. I had a fun time doing all those fitness tests and listening to those guest speakers.

I had a really fun week and I can’t wait till the next week! The next time I have those fitness tests I would try to push myself even harder.

My First Week of School in Grade 6 – Reflection

Hey, what’s up peeps!!

It is a new year of school and now I am in 6th grade. So I wanted to tell you what happened in the first week of school. Here is my reflection:

On my first week of school, we had a lot of fun. We did not do much work because the first week of school was just to get ready for the school year. The only thing that we really did was that we had to get used to the new schedule because this year the principal wanted us to start school earlier. Last year when we started class at 8:00 and ended school at 2:30 pm but he wanted us to end school early so that it woud not be that traffic. Usually, many schools that were pretty close ended school at 2:30. The funny thing was that some of the teachers also did not get used to the time and always mixed up the times so we always had to remind the teacher that it was times up. Me and my class 6A got to make a water bottle holder. We did this activity on Thursday. Some people made the water bottle holder out of cans, plastic bottles and plastic containers. I made mine out of a old cup that I don’t use anymore. We found some bits and pieces of paper in a box and I used it to wrap my cup with. After wrapping my cup, I used some stickers that I found at home to decorate. Then the hardest part was to figure out where we could put it with out blocking our way. We used some plastic clips to hold it up on the desk’s leg. Most people’s water bottle holder constantly fell down. But one of my friends thought of a way to keep it up with a few yards of yarn. We had created a competition because we wanted to see who’s would stay up the longest. My water bottle holder stayed up for one day. The next time I saw my water bottle holder was on Monday, guess what it did not fall down at all!! Do you know why we did that?? That is because our teacher did not like how our water bottles were blocking peoples ways. On the last few years, there were many spills in the class rooms. Some people forgot put down their water bottle on the floor so they end up knocking it over and spilling it and even worse it spilled on the computer because the computer was on the desk. So I recommend not to put your bottle on any surface that has your computer on.

I had a fun first week of school.  I have learnt many things this week such as never put your water bottle on your desk when working on your computer and always remember to close your water bottle cap shut. The bad thing about the new schedule is that I have to wake up even earlier now. I wish that every single week  was like that.
