Acquisition of Knowledge – The Arts

The diagram above is an explanation of which ways of knowing (WOK) are used primarily in the acquisition of knowledge from the artwork “The Persistence of Memory”. As a summary, I believe the 4 ways of knowing that are used are Imagination, Sense Perception, Intuition and Emotion. Consequently, the 4 also work together to create a “cycle of knowing”, which is presented on the right of the diagram. As seen, sense perception is used first to understand and to engage with the artwork. Then intuition is next to go to work, as first thoughts and feelings are developed regarding the subject. Imagination helps to analyse and create the viewer’s understanding and knowledge that can is extracted from the artwork. And finally, emotion is developed after careful analysis and imagination.
