Tuning In Sharing The Planet Investigation

by Bernice on May 20, 2013

What interests me about this?

The reason why we can’t buy the pizza in Chartwells and how it affects different people.

What do I already know and believe?

  • We are not allowed to buy the pizza in Chartwells, unless afterschool
  • Admin makes the rules, not Chartwells

What do the words/phrases in the C.I mean?

Central Idea: The use of power has consequences that affect relationships and access to opportunities.

Power = The ability to do something

Consequences = The effect an action

Relationships = The connection between different people

Access = Being able to do certain things

Opportunities = The circumstances you are in the cause you to take action

What do I want to know more about? What questions do I have?

  • Why can’t we buy pizza in Chartwells?
  • What are the affects of the choices of admin to different people?
  • What are the different responses of people about these choices?

How could I find out more about this?

  • Survey
  • Interview
  • Observation

Tuning Into Sharing The Planet Action

by Bernice on May 7, 2013

The Ladder Of Participation

Today in class, we did an activity called The Ladder of Participation.  —>

We first individually wrote down some possible action we can do in the unit Sharing The Planet, which is about power. I wrote down about making a P.S.A, a blog and making a poster to create awareness about “your issue” to the world.

Afterwards, in our table group we discussed possible actions we came up with and wrote them down on sticky notes and stick it on a big piece of paper, sharing with the class.

Here is the sheet of paper our class came up with for possible actions we can do during the unit Sharing The Planet.

Tuning In Sharing The Planet

by Bernice on May 6, 2013

Today in class we tuned into the unit Sharing The Planet. We played a game called ribbon, and 5 people got to be red, another 5 got to be blue and the rest of the class got to be yellow. The reds and blues got to do whatever they want, they can ask other students (which are yellow) to do small jobs for them. In the game sheet the reds and blues only have to find 10 words that are related with the theme, Sharing The Planet and make a sentence for the words. Where else the yellows had to find 20 words and make a sentence for all 20. The yellows cannot talk to the reds or the blues, can’t sit down and have to do jobs that the reds and blues ask.

I was in the red group, and it felt like I was in change of the yellows and I can do what ever we want. But the yellows   cannot talk to a red or blue, sit on a chair and use a computer. They must do jobs blue and red asks and finish all the tasks.

This activity connects with the theme Sharing The Planet because we should have equal rights and be treated the same and we have to share the planet.

Bucket O’ Learning – March 25th – 29th

This week’s “Bucket O’ Learning” I watched a youtube clip that is connected with my investigation, female rights. It is based on a women activist named Harriet Tubman, she was born into slave, but later she escaped because she was afraid that she was going to be sold. Harriet was a brave woman, because she helped hundreds of slaves find freedom, conducting the underground railroad to the North, where they are free.

Bucket O’ Learning – March 18th – 22nd

This week’s “Bucket O’ Learning”, using IXL and Khan’s academy I practiced my math skill (Percentage). I first watched a video on Khan’s academy then I did some practice on IXL. At first I found the problems challenging, but afterwards with more practice I do,  the more confident I get.

WP: The Jetpack Race

by Bernice on March 11, 2013

Writing Prompt #4

This is a sport I came up with that requires jetpacks. It is called the water jetpack race! So you and your BFF or friends wears a jetpack and have a race over water, it’s sorta like a running race but with jetpack and over water. This race is kindda fun because if one of your friend’s jetpack suddenly dosen’t work along the way, then they will fall straight into the water! So this is a sport that I came up with that requires jetpacks, hope you like it! ;)
