I recently downloaded an application called 'f.lux' on my iMac that is helping me to get better sleep. In a nutshell, the application filters out the blue light from my computer display at night and reverts it back to normal during the day. It works based on the fact that blue light interferes with our circadian rhythm, which is often described as the body's natural sleep cycle clock. This week I'd like to share with you a few steps I've been taking to get better sleep. Firstly, I've been using a sleep calculator to determine optimal times to go to bed. This calculator works by taking into account the average time for a sleep cycle and the average time for a human to fall asleep. Got out my yoga mat, a mindfulness exercise video, and a French book. The perfect combination for a good night's rest. I read in silence for a while before lying down, closing my eyes, and focusing on my breathing as the video instructed me to. I've been reading Barbara Demick's Nothing to Envy before bed every night in order to relax. Have nothing but praise for the book — it's a wonderful piece of journalism that so meticulously explores the lives of ordinary citizens living under the world's most notorious totalitarian regime, North Korea. It's a great way to disconnect from technology before enjoying a refreshing eight hours of sleep. Also trying out a bit of meditation in order to improve sleep quality.
