It’s Still Safe to Fly

A little rant for today. Plane crashes get a lot of media attention, and recently there have been quite a few of them. But that doesn't mean you need to cancel your plane tickets. Flying is still by far the safest way to travel, despite recent events. (Thanks CNN for giving false impressions...) In fact, if you're so scared of being in an accident and refuse to be on planes, you might as well stop using other forms of transportation. The truth is, you are a lot more likely to die going to…Read more …

Luck, Popularity, and Money: Where’s the Blood, Sweat, and Tears?

Harry Potter is a really popular book series. Lots of people read Harry Potter. But, to be honest with you, there are many books that are written just as well. People don't discover them, because Harry Potter is most popular. Gangnam Style is a popular mainstream song. But, there are millions of songs out there that are similar to Gangnam Style. People don't discover them, because Gangnam Style is the most popular. Good authors write because of their love of writing; good artists sing to fulfill their musical dreams. But, some authors write…Read more …

There is no particular order - I'm writing what comes out of my brain. Barack Obama Re-elected US president Barack Obama was re-elected for another four years, beating fellow republican challenger Mitt Romney. International Geographical Congress (IGC) Cologne 2012

My fellow students have been learning lots and lots in grade 6, and in Cologne I've been learning as well by taking part in the 5-day I (International Geographical Congress) in Cologne. I've never been able to participate in a huge conference like this one before, so I took my chances as the organizers let me in free :). I'm pretty sure they've never seen an 11 year old in a conference before.. And let me tell you: attending a conference is much more interesting than you think it is. Topics range from…Read more …

Time To Reflect: How the World Has Changed

Note: This post will be updated constantly, since there will be more and more things to reflect on. "Once upon a time, there was a planet called earth. Then I was born. The end." No, it isn't that simple. As you think about the years, and how they have arrived and gone so fast, you also think about how the world has changed. There was a time when humans didn't exist. There was a time when a loaf of bread costs 10 cents. There was a time when everybody used telegraphs, and there…Read more …

A Photo(s) A Day – Flooding and A Spark in the Universe

Note: This is for the BBB (challenge #7 and #8) and class 5E a photo a day. Flooding and global warming has been at worse the recent years, and the picture shows it happening in Thailand, but the whole world will be affected soon, not just Thailand. Flooding in Thailand has been at its worse for the couple of years. I reckon Thailand's sea level is not very high, and since Thailand is not very rich, implementations to stop this from happening have been skeptical to plans. Thailand is the first victim (or…Read more …

SOPA, PIPA Give Us Freedom (+ACTA)

This is a short but very, very, serious matter. It serves as a vote to oppose SOPA and PIPA. Wikipedia, Reddit, Wordpress, and many sites have blacked out for a while to protest about what SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act), and PIPA (Protect IP Act) are doing. Here is what is happening in a nutshell. I completely agree. A website shouldn't be shut down just because a user had some copyright issues, and even worse, sometimes copyright issues aren't even alive, but SOPA (and PIPA) can still have the ability to shut it…Read more …

The Costa Concordia, a cruise ship due from Civitavecchia, Italy to Savona, Italy has struck a reef four miles off course and ran aground near Gigilo port. Although the effects were terrifying, almost all of the passengers on board survived the accident, leaving only several dead, trapped or missing. The stricken boat was due to arrive in Savona but that wasn't the case; it started to go off course to the left of…Read more …
