Reflection on Healthy Habits

Overall, I was not very pleased with the way I completed the healthy habits assignment. Although I made a total of 11 posts, which provided a balanced overview of how I tried to improve three main aspects of my lifestyle (sleep, food, and fitness), they were rather inconsistent and did not always reflect the goals that I set for myself in September. In fact, I only achieved two out of my four targets - both pertaining to getting better sleep - which rightly suggests that I found it difficult to persevere. I was…Read more …

I recently downloaded an application called 'f.lux' on my iMac that is helping me to get better sleep. In a nutshell, the application filters out the blue light from my computer display at night and reverts it back to normal during the day. It works based on the fact that blue light interferes with our circadian rhythm, which is often described as the body's natural sleep cycle clock. I've included a screenshot of my settings below: As you can see, the application automatically helps me determine the optimal screen tint based on my…Read more …

I am in the Mainland visiting relatives this week during Chinese New Year, so I've been taking advantage of this opportunity to eat healthier. On the menu today, for instance, was a hotpot-style dinner featuring fresh organic vegetables, cold cucumber, and noodles. Back in Hong Kong we usually stir-fry our greens in oil as it's faster to prepare them that way, but these hotpot vegetables were less oily and much, much more tender. I think we'll be eating hotpot back home a lot more often now.Read more …

I have been walking up and down the hill to access the South Island Line recently. Commuting to school via MTR is both more reliable and healthier than taking the bus. Walking up the hill means it's much easier to meet my target of 7000 steps a day, and the new MTR line means I get to sleep in a bit more all the while not worrying about missing the bus. I've also found that walking up the hill has helped me become more energised in the morning, especially for first period classes…Read more …

This week I'd like to share with you a few steps I've been taking to get better sleep. Firstly, I've been using a sleep calculator to determine optimal times to go to bed. This calculator works by taking into account the average time for a sleep cycle and the average time for a human to fall asleep. It determines an optimal sleep time to maximise the chances of waking up during a period of light sleep. As a result I've been going to bed at around 10:45pm each night - and feeling a…Read more …

Ate a nutritious salad for lunch today and brought some whole grain crackers as a side snack. Red cabbage, lettuce, potatoes, tofu, and beans. Delicious! Next time I'll consider adding a few other ingredients available in the salad bar. This will vary my nutritional sources and make my diet more balanced. #food via Instagram http://ift.tt/2fObqrNRead more …

Got out my yoga mat, a mindfulness exercise video, and a French book. The perfect combination for a good night's rest. I read in silence for a while before lying down, closing my eyes, and focusing on my breathing as the video instructed me to. A great way to relax the mind after a busy day of work. #sleep via Instagram http://ift.tt/2erHbnKRead more …

I achieved my 7000 steps goal today by doing a hike up Yuk Kwai Shan, which is next to where I live. This hike killed two birds with one stone because I needed to get to a clear area to fly a drone, which is part of my personal project. Woke up at 8am and did the hike in the morning. Came back down and did a bit of walking along the promenade before returning home. It was refreshing and it finally started to feel like autumn after that fire alarm the other…Read more …

I've been reading Barbara Demick's Nothing to Envy before bed every night in order to relax. Have nothing but praise for the book — it's a wonderful piece of journalism that so meticulously explores the lives of ordinary citizens living under the world's most notorious totalitarian regime, North Korea. It's a great way to disconnect from technology before enjoying a refreshing eight hours of sleep. Also trying out a bit of meditation in order to improve sleep quality. I love putting on Spotify's 'Peaceful Piano' track as I let my mind wander. In other news, I…Read more …

Brought an apple to school today as a healthy snack. Apples are tasty and nutritious! I'll bring some more fruits tomorrow. #food via Instagram http://ift.tt/2dTHU2YRead more …
