Music: March Reflection

1.  Explain how you believe you are progressing on your instrument so far this year. I believe I am progressing well on my instrument this year. I credit a lot of my improvement to being in Symphonic Winds, which has provided me a selection of challenging repertoire to practice on my clarinet. Music: End of Year Reflection

Music this year is coming to a close so I'd like to reflect a bit on how things went, in terms of my final assessments but also the year as a whole. My final playing test (see comments) went better than expected as I didn't encounter any problems with note accuracy and managed to overcome my nerves. I was quite comfortable with my minor scales and managed to play all of them in time with a melodic contour. Responding – December Tests

The playing test went rather smoothly thanks to prolonged practice. My five major scales and one chromatic scale went particularly well, as I played the correct notes fluidly and evenly in a legato fashion. I tried to give each scale a nice dynamic curve and hopefully played them in a balanced tone, albeit a bit breathy. I was comfortable with the chosen tempo and I did not need to slow down due to technical challenges. The piece generally came across as acceptable. Music: Musicianship

How has the content covered in class so far (theory and performance) helped your development as a musician? Being a pianist outside band class, I've been accustomed to independent playing. The content in class, especially performance, has allowed me to gain invaluable experience in playing in an ensemble, where a different skill set is required to be successful. In independent playing there is no conductor; the musician plays freely at the tempo of his choosing without needing to take into consideration the needs of others.
