Music: Composing a Piece for Piano Trio

Inspiration and Artistic Intention The following image of a man walking through a forest during sunrise was the inspiration for the theme of my composition for piano trio, entitled Theme and Variations. (Photograph by Matthias Hauser, source) The warm undertones and soft light in this image really bring out a sense of peace and tranquility as the light rays draw our attention towards the man. He appears to be taking small, unhurried steps and is taking full advantage of what nature has to offer at this beautiful time of day. I wanted to…Read more …

Music: Ternary Composition Final

Writing a ternary composition for clarinet and piano was a rewarding process, especially considering I play both instruments and can appreciate what I've achieved the past month. Below you can listen to my composition and see the score: Music score I was pretty pleased with the harmony incorporated in my piece, which generally suited the blues style quite well. I incorporated various seventh chords to give my piece some more tonal colour, and I even experimented with diminished seventh passing chords in the second phrase of my B section, which helped give the piece…Read more …

Music: Stella by Starlight Final Solo

Stella by Starlight Sheet Music Final Stella Recording: This was my first time writing a jazz solo and it has challenged me to a great extent. The 7-3 resolution was vital in establishing melodic interest in my solo, which is why I felt a little out of my depth when composing for the middle section that doesn't go up the circle of fourths. But this has allowed me to develop my potential and recognise areas of improvement. In a sense the solo-writing process was very structured as we were given a chord progression…Read more …

Music: Stella by Starlight Draft Solo

I have tried (and failed) to write a jazz solo against the chords of Stella by Starlight. My attempts at including ligons and 1-2-3-5, 1-3-4-5 figures have been futile as I feel that the audio recording still doesn't capture the swing feel which is what I tried to achieve. So keep in mind that this is an unpolished, incomplete version. Seeing as I need some comments, please leave a helpful suggestion on how I can improve the first 16 bars. Stella Draft Thank you!Read more …

Music: Ternary Composition Draft

After considering the feedback I received on my eight bar composition, I have added a B section to my original piece which has now evolved into a ternary composition. Below is a draft of my ternary piece. Please leave a helpful comment on what I could do to make it better. Ternary Draft - score Below I outline a few changes from my eight bar composition, after soliciting feedback: For instance, I have now labelled my chords underneath the bass line and have included the key centres, as I have modulated to the dominant.…Read more …

Music: 8 Bar Composition Final

After soliciting feedback from peers, I have updated my 8 bar composition. I have attempted to include more on-beat chords to ensure rhythmic stability and I have also tried to experiment with different types of chords. (note: there is a chord labelling mistake for the second chord in bar 6, it should be vi, not IV) As usual, please leave a helpful comment below on what you thought I did well on and what you think I could do better on for my ternary piece.Read more …

Music: 8 Bar Composition Draft

In music class recently, I've been composing a 8 bar piece for clarinet and piano. I included a blues twist to my composition by choosing various seventh chords and by experimenting some chromaticism. I've been rather pleased with my progress, especially with how my melodic line and rhythmic motif complemented each other, but I found the piano accompaniment difficult and slightly repetitive. 8 Bar Draft - Score (concert pitch) Please leave a helpful comment on what I did well in my draft and what I could work on for my final copy. Your feedback…Read more …

Music: Composition Task Journal

(All score written in concert pitch.) Entry 1 - February 28 I'm a fan of jazz music, and at first wanted to write a jazz piece, but after doing some research I've concluded that it is one of the more difficult genres of music to write. After taking a look at Tim Davies' website, where he talks an awful lot about the "rules" of writing in a jazz style, I decided to once and for all avoid the complexities of the genre. I'll definitely experiment with it in the future, but for this…Read more …

Music: Writing a Good Melody

My previous post dealt with writing a good rhythm; now on to bigger and better things: writing a good melody! Here's one that I whipped together. It's written for flute but the MIDI recording sounds like a robot playing the oboe, which wasn't the effect I was going for - hence the name Piper's Hymn! Anyhow, here is the score and you can listen to it below: As with the previous post, constructive criticism is welcome :)Read more …
