Music: End of Year Reflection

Music this year is coming to a close so I'd like to reflect a bit on how things went, in terms of my final assessments but also the year as a whole. My final playing test (see comments) went better than expected as I didn't encounter any problems with note accuracy and managed to overcome my nerves. I was quite comfortable with my minor scales and managed to play all of them in time with a melodic contour. As for the solo, I managed the tempo, dynamics, and triplet runs quite well due…Read more …

Responding – December Tests

The playing test went rather smoothly thanks to prolonged practice. My five major scales and one chromatic scale went particularly well, as I played the correct notes fluidly and evenly in a legato fashion. I tried to give each scale a nice dynamic curve and hopefully played them in a balanced tone, albeit a bit breathy. I was comfortable with the chosen tempo and I did not need to slow down due to technical challenges. The piece generally came across as acceptable. Note accuracy was not much of an issue, but during practice…Read more …

Music: Theory Mapping

In preparation for our upcoming theory test, we did a fun exercise in class today to practice. Transposition and seventh chords are weak areas that I will practice more. Theory MappingRead more …

Music: Figured Bass/Extension to the Triad

Here is a worksheet I did in music class on figured bass and extension to the triad. I'd heard of these concepts before but this was the first time I was exposed to them formally and so I found the exercises a bit confusing at first. As always, I hope to practice this skill so I can do well on the upcoming theory test! Figured Bass/Extension to the TriadRead more …

Music: Augmented and Diminished Triads

Today was the last theory presentation (aww!). A group of students taught the class augmented and diminished triads. Here is a completed worksheet I completed, although the answer sheet had quite a few flaws in it. Aug/Dim-TriadsRead more …

Music: Alto/Tenor Clefs and Transposition

Another group presented in music class - today's topic was alto/tenor clefs and transposition. I'm still quite slow at identifying notes in these clefs and don't really know which instruments take which clef, so I'll need to focus on this in order to do well on the final theory exam. AltoTenorClefs¬†- both pagesRead more …

Music: Major and Minor Triads

Today in music class a group of students taught the class another component of music theory - major and minor triads. I wasn't very confident with these to begin with so the worksheets helped refresh my memory a bit. I'll need to study some more to grasp the concept though. Maj/Min Triads - 1 Maj/Min Triads - 2Read more …

Music: Intervals Presentation

Our first music assignment of the year was a theory presentation - my group members and I became experts in one aspect of musical theory, intervals, and we used our expertise to teach the class in the form of a presentation, information sheet, worksheet, and an answer sheet. Reflecting on our presentation, I feel like we've done a thorough job in explaining many aspects of intervals to the class. Not only did we explain by using the board to do sample questions, we even used the digital piano to enhance our explanations. For…Read more …
