Design: Interconnected Project Reflection

For my final MYP Design project, I created a historical documentary on the Chinese Cultural Revolution with two other group members who share similar family backgrounds. Each of us explored the experiences of our relatives during the revolution through interviews, and gained a greater appreciation for documentaries as a means of retelling their stories. You can view our final film, entitled "The Red Guard", below: The primary goal of our documentary was to raise the target audience's knowledge and understanding of how the Cultural Revolution influenced the lives of our three central characters.…Read more …

Design: Goal for Interconnected Project

Based on the feedback I received for the Heartbeats assignment I think I was strong in many areas. I constructed a detailed research plan and carried out an extensive analysis of existing products, I developed my ideas through detailed criteria and plans, I conceived a tangible final product and documented this in my process journal, and I used testing methods to critically evaluate my product against the criteria. My goal this term will be to maintain a high level of achievement across all four criteria and achieve a grade of at least 30/32…Read more …

Reflection on Creating My Heart Valve

Embedded below is a one minute video reflection explaining my design and some changes I made during the process. Here is a summary of the changes made to my design and plan: I decided to abort the caged-ball approach after my initial testing found out that the ball wouldn't snugly fit the gap between two water bottle halves. As both my mockups were of this approach, I spent some time testing out new valve mechanism ideas and my draft schedule was too optimistic of a time estimate. My rack idea changed as a…Read more …

Design Day Term One

Design term has started again, which means I will again be embarking on a month-long project following the four stages of the design cycle — this time I will be creating an artificial heart valve and presenting it to students in grade seven. As per tradition, design day kicks off the project with a series of activities designed to 'tune us in', to borrow a few words from the PYP inquiry cycle. Embedded below is a video reflection of my key takeaways from today's activities, which included a series of brainstorming activities and…Read more …

Term One Design Project Reflection

Below is an image of my completed graphic novel contribution: After completing this project, I’ve learned that Illustrator can be an extremely powerful and versatile tool, not only for creating a graphic novel panel sequence but also for other purposes, which I am sure to experience in the imminent design cycle (infographic creation). I’ve also learned about different types of organisation tools, such as the Gantt chart, which will definitely help me in future projects and also in time management. This is one of my areas for improvement, not only in design but…Read more …

Design: Design Day Reflection

This design day has allowed me to tune into the new design project—creating a digital graphic novel panel sequence. I explored some of the skills required to complete the project and came up with things I knew and wanted to know for criterion A, and I feel like it has been a worthwhile day to get a kick start on the project (which seems to be progressing quite well so far). We were presented with a design challenge and asked to put it in our own words, solidifying our understanding of the task…Read more …

Waste Not, Want Not

I've recently created a package for a calculator clock hybrid. I'd appreciate if you could leave some valuable feedback. It should only take 5-10 minutes of your time. Loading...Read more …

Design: Waste Not, Want Not III (ATLs)

As this design day is coming to an end, I'd like to reflect on how I've exemplified the four MYP approaches to learning (ATL) attributes. ______________________________________ My participation today was excellent as I stayed on task virtually all the time. I posted multiple responses to people's questions on the forum and actively asked my peers and teachers for help myself. While doing the mini group design project, I actively contributed ideas to my group. I'd rate myself at a seven out of eight. My collaboration/communication today was good as I somewhat collaborated with…Read more …

Design: Waste Not, Want Not II

So as to get familiar with Sketchup, a 3D modelling program that we'll be using to plan our packages, I did a little practicing beforehand. Here's my apple package on Sketchup: Understanding geometry while designing plays a pivotal role in reducing our carbon footprint, and our impact on the environment. Less area of used material equates to less carbon footprint, as such, it is important to design a packaging that is both appealing and resource-efficient. Sketchup helps us design resource-efficient packages, as it is possible to design with accurate measurements. As 3D printing…Read more …

More Than Just a Book

Dear grade 5-6s, I would much appreciate it if you could read an iBook — an interactive book — that I have created. You can download it here. Hope you will get something out of it. I would also appreciate it if you could fill in the survey below or leave a comment answering the survey questions. Please answer these honestly. Thanks! Your feedback is invaluable.
