From May 6th to May 12th, we (people in my grade and I) went to Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. This week was the grade 7/8s experience week. We had a choice of either going to Thailand or Beijing, and I chose to go to Thailand. The majority of the grade went to Thailand and only 28 went to Beijing. In Thailand, we got to do lots of out door activities and we got and to know the Thai Culture. We did activities such as rock climbing, archery, Thai cooking, Hill tribe hike, Kayaking, Confidence course, Community project, and playing with kids at a local school. We were split up into groups of 13 so we ended up in 8 groups.
Rock climbing was pretty fun, and it was a challenge as well. I haven’t done lots of rock climbing before but I still tried it. There were 6 courses and they were divided into 2 levels, easy and medium. The 3 furthest to the right are the easy ones since it’s slanting in and the 3 on the left are more challenging. I’ve learnt the walls slanting in will be easier as it requires more strength from your thighs and less from your upper body. I think the green wall was the hardest as it was slanting outwards and there was a huge gap at around a bit less than halfway and it was challenging to finish the course without cheating by using 1 red rock. No one finished the green course except for Connor because he had done climbing before. In this activity we also learnt how to take responsibility for our group mates because we all got a chance to be the Anker man and that’s when we are responsible for our group mates safety. I think the rock climbing at MRVR was more fun than the others because we got to be the anchor man and take some responsibility.
Another activity I liked was archery. I liked archery because I like shooting things and I had always wanted to do archery since I have never done archery before. Archery was actually easier than I expected, I always though it would be hard to pull the string back and it would be hard to aim the bow. During the archery session we had, I learnt new terms about archery. Such as the nock and fletches. I have also learnt the correct position for firing a bow and how to load a arrow onto a bow correctly. During the session, we were in 3 groups of 3 and 1 group of 4. Everyone got to shoot 13 arrows each in total and with the last 4 arrows; we had to shoot for our dinner. For example, if we got a arrow in the gold, then we get a fork. If we get another arrow in the red or blue then we get a spoon. Then in order to get a knife you will need to get your arrow to hit the black and white. Finally to get a plate you will need to hit a spot outside the circle but inside the target.
The third activity I liked was kayaking. I liked kayaking because I think its very fun and I liked how kayaking requires lots of teamwork. I like doing sports that require teamwork because people won’t need to do everything by themselves and if you mess something up by accident your teammate is always there to cover up your mistake. Right after kayaking when we got back to the resort, I broke my toenail cause I wanted to run away from someone and I tripped on my flip-flops. Blood was everywhere after I broke it and Daniel, one of the instructors was the first to see me get injured so he brought me to the washroom and helped me clean my wound. Shortly after our school nurse came and she cleaned my wound for me once more and helped me put a dressing on it. Then she said I needed to go to the hospital so 15 minutes later I went to the hospital with Mr. Breton and Thomas since he was hurt as well. After this incident, I figured out I should try to not wear flip flops that often anymore as I have tripped many times cause of it already.
I think I was a risk-taker on this trip because I tried lots of different activities that I never did before. For example, I did the confidence course even when I didn’t quite want to because the water was dirty. After doing the course, I think the water wasn’t as dirty as I thought it was and the course was easier than I thought it would be.
After this trip, I have learnt a lot and experienced a lot. I have experienced the Thai culture, and how it feels to live at the countryside with power cuts sometimes. I liked this trip a lot cause we did lots of fun activities that I liked. I didn’t quite like the power cuts though I think that was a cool experience. I think this was the best trip so far.
