First day with Mr. Tim

This morning I met Mr. Tim, I showed him around to the library for a card, the cafeteria, forum, washrooms and gym. Then I asked Mr. Steiner to borrow a basketball to use. Then Mr. Tim and I played basketball for a while. I went to the library to return and borrow a book. I did a checklist worksheet and read a part of the book I borrowed. Then I showed him First Class, an email program that CDNIS uses. Being out of class for half a day makes me feel weird , because usually I stay in class during school time, so it makes me feel strange. My goal is to improve my social skills so that I can get along with others and make friends.

Weekly Reflection Nov. 18

This week grade 6 learned about how markets are organized and operated. I learned that if you want to organize a market you’ll need to find a good location. Another tip to be successful is to find out the community for that place. So that it will serve their daily needs, or else you they won’t buy anything from you. Most importantly, you will go bankrupt. This week our class went to a wet market and a market square in Aberdeen to investigate about our U.O.I., most people there are at least 80 years old! For some reason, all the shops there were selling things that old people don’t need, so researching about communities is very important in retail business. Also you need to have a way for people to get to your market, otherwise it will end up like a ghost town and it will be empty. We also learned about how those markets operate, like how it works and runs. You also need to put up ads, because if you don’t, no one will know that your market even exists. The two things that I could do that couldn’t before was operate and organize a market, now that I learned about it.

Weekly Reflection

This week we learned about markets, that’s why there was a grade 6 market recently. We learned that when making a market, you have to make ads and advertise about it, so that people will bring money to buy your things. A market must have a good location and must be on a good time. It also can’t be too cheap or you will end up losing money, not gaining it. A market needs to attract customers, so don’t make it look ugly. You also need to sell useful products so people will buy it. Our class earned more than 2,500$ in only 55 minutes! After the market project, I now know how to make a market.  This week a author teached us how to come up with ideas. He said you needed to write special things that happened and to think of basic things. The author’s name is Jack Gantos. After his presentation I now can come up with more ideas using his method to do so. I still will need to improve upon helping my group out when doing group activities, such as the market one.

Reflection on the Week

This week a man came and gave us a presenation. His name is Mr.Smith, he is a designer of Rebok. He design mostly clothes in Asia. The first thing he told us was about his inventions and his old company  Vessel. He invented a candle that didn’t burn tables. The reason he came  was to tell us about designing clothes and shoes. He told us that there was a man that they poked with Rebok equipment to see if the clothes were right. That man had to be the perfect middle sized. The funniest part bout his presentation was the crying room. He explained that bad designers go in there just to cry. He said he cried in there before once. That was what he told us.This week I also learned about art. I think everyone can be an artist because there are many forms of art and everyone is good on something. Today is also the school’s Halloween party! This is what happened during this strange week…

W.W.A. Reflection

In this unit I have learned different ways to deal with conflicts, like to investigate deeper into the conflict or to simply compromise. I also found out about how differences in values and attitudes can cause conflicts that are dealt with in different ways. Now I understand how conflicts are formed and know more resolutions to deal with it. I also learned why identify needs are so important to solve and cause conflicts. Now I can do more things such as, understand a problem before having a conflict, find out the other person’s reason to do what they are doing and understand their identify needs. That way, less conflicts will appear and even if it does, it would be solved easier.

Weekly Reflection

This week I learnt how to put all the items on a computer into a external hard drive. I also learned the principles of design and what is fauve art. I also learned different ways to solve conflicts. I now know that values and beliefs can cause conflicts. Now I can do more things, such as backing up a computer and painting fauve art. I also know how to solve conflicts in varius ways now. I need to improve on writing comments and connections in literacy circles.

Bird

The owl is a bird that always takes his time and find out more about the conflict. The owl never rushes  anything, no matter what.Before acting, the owl always thinks for a long period of time.The owl is a very  wise bird.

 

 

 

 

The parakeet is a bird that always give in and sacrifice what he wants for friendship. He cares about relationship, so he never gets to do what he wants to do. He thinks relationship is priority one and nothing else is more important.

 

The woodpecker is a bird that is nothing, but a pain in the neck, he only does what he wants and cares about no one else. Woodpecker are very offensive and annoying. They only here what they have to say. The woodpecker is the most annoying creature ever created, on earth.

 

Humming birds make quick and fast decisions, they solve conflicts by making everybody forget that there actually is a problem. They want everybody to be happy and no one to be sad or mad.

 

All the ostriches ever do is get a big pile of sand and put it on his head to block his view. The ostrich is an animal with no guts.

Fibonacci Sequence

The Fibonacci sequence is a sequence adding the previous two numbers like the example below. A man named Leonardo Fibonacci invented the sequence. That’s why it’s called the Fibonacci sequence.

This is an example of the Fibonacci sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 238, 382, 620 and 1002.

I chose this picture because it starts with 1 pair of rabbits, and every two months the pair gives birth to another pair, so it adds up the previous two numbers and gets the sum. At the end of 5 months, there are already 5 pairs of rabbits. This is the Fibonacci sequence…

Book Report

The book is called Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It is about a boy named Gregory (Greg). He just had his summer break. He is now in middle school. At night, Rodrick Greg’s brother woke him and said it was time for school, but Greg’s dad came out and explained that it was still night time. At school Greg got stuck with morons. After school, he and his best friend Rowley made a haunted house which eventually failed, because Rowley’s dad disagreed with the idea. The following day Greg signed up for safety patrol and he got hot chocolate every morning as a patrol. Then Greg chased people with worms and was kicked out of safety patrol. The next day was Halloween so Greg and Rowley went trick or treating, but a few teenagers in a truck splashed water at Greg. So some of his candy got soaked. Then Greg shouted something that he immediately regretted. He said he would call the police. Next the teenagers chased them for the whole day. When they finally went home, Greg’s father eliminated all their candy. A couple day later, the teenagers came for revenge, they made Rowley eat the cheese. Then Greg lied and told everyone it was him who ate it. The cheese touch is something that needed to be passed around, unless you cross your fingers.

The main character in this book is called Gregory Heffley, he is an awkward and a really wimpy kid. He is strange, because he does crazy things and wimpy things. Greg just finished summer brake and now needs t go to middle school.

The section of this book that relates to my life is I also unfortunately finished my summer holiday and started school. I also have an older brother, except he is a little better than Rodrick.

If I were the main character, instead of lying and saying that I threw away the cheese, I would tell the truth and say that Rowley ate the cheese once and for all.

Simulation Activities

Yesterday, our class went to the G9 area and did some simulation activities. The first thing we did was to get separated into groups, I was in the green group. Our group had a G9 that told us where to go and what to do. The simulation where our group went first was the hunger simulation. We watched video about hungry people. After that, we ate chips and chocolate. That was my favorite simulation. The next simulation was pretty boring, it was a simulation about child labor. All we did was cut squares. It was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo000 booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooring. I hated that simulation a lot!!! Those were the simulations I did.

S.L.L.R.

SLLR stands for student lead learning review. It is a day when you get to have a day off! Your parents will choose a time for you and your parents to go in your classroom for thirty minutes and you will have to show them around the room. There will be four stations. You can go to the stations in any order you want. There will be a math station, a literacy station, a computer station and a chinese station. Then your parents get to choose if they want to go to the music station, the PE (physical education) station and a french station. If your parent and you both agree to skip one of those stations, you are allowed to do that. SLLR is a way to show your parents what you are learning in school. After all that, you will get to bring your portfolios back home once again. I like SLLRs because it gives you an extra holiday! That is what an SLLR actually is.

Artifact Project

Our class is making an artifact out of clay. Then we need to complete the sheet called “My Buried Artifact”. The artifact will be broken up and scattered around South Bay beach. Then another student will dig it up and glue it together. Weeks later, I went to the other classrooms in grade 5 and retrieved my artifact that I made. There were two steps: 1. We needed to put the “My Buried Artifact” sheet in the desk where our original artifact is. 2.We would collect it. That’s what we did. Even at the end of the hunt I still couldn’t find my artifact, I think it was too small and broken up. It was a long and fun project!

Artifact Game

Since March, our class has been playing a game. “The Artifact Game”. It is a game that we play almost every single morning. The game is simple. The teacher will show you a picture and you will interpret it. Now you have to guess what this is! This is what you need to do: write down what, where, when, and who. Then, you answer the questions. It’s that simple! Well, you need to interpret it, not guess what it is or where it is from. The difference between guessing is just a totally random thing that you say, but interpreting is an educated guess, not the first thing that pops up in your mind, That is the difference. The best way to comment is when you make a good interpretation, not something totally crazy. It needs to make sense. Another important rule about the artifact game, is you will need to be as silent as a mouse, or else, you will effect other people’s ideas. So follow the rules!

C.C.C.

C.C.C. stands for class community circle, it is something our teacher likes to do every Friday. This is how it works, you sit in a circle, and only the person who has the ball is allowed to talk. When you get the ball, you can talk about something interesting or something that everybody can understand. But some people, talk about something totally random, and some people talk about boring things. After that, we will usually play a game. That, is what C.C.C. means to me.

P.S.A.

A P.S.A. stands for public service announcement, they are used not for money, but for the good of the audiences. They are usually warning you not to do things that are bad for you or others. It usually lasts about 30-60 minutes long. The process to make one is simple, first right a script of what you are going to do, then follow it and make a movie in imovie, and put it in youtube and on your blog. Graveyard Visit

Today, we had a field trip to a cemetery. There were lots and lots of grave stones over there. We were put into groups of five, but, a teacher had to be in sight. We looked at the stones and wrote the important stuff down. Most of the dead people died in the 1930′s, it is really strange. The strange thing was, the people who died are usually military people, they died by shipwrecks and war. It didn’t really make sense. Some people died at the age of a single day, and some people not even a year. Well, the main problem was, I was tired and stopped walking, I was totally out of breath. Then, Ms. Kissinger got mad with me and I had to go to her classroom. That was what happened in the cemetery.

CNY Holiday

The Chinese New Year break was not so good this year because my brother was halfway to death, so we had to stay in HK for my parents to take care of him. The reason he was almost dead was because one of his lungs shrink to the size of a pea. His lung shrink because it had a hole in it.  He had to do 3 operations to cover the hole. Well it all happened because of two major reasons. First of all, my dad had the same problem when he was young when he rode a motorcycle and the wind went inside his mouth and made his lung shrink. Secondly, my brother always smoke, he smokes almost every day. So now he is in the hospital and my parents always went to visit him. So for the entire ten days of my boring holiday I stayed in HK. At least I did something. I also went to the flower fair two days in a row. Some of the days my friends came over and played, and one day I went to my grandmother’s house to celebrate the Lunar New Year. The rest of the time, I played my PS3 and computer.

Reflection of a Book (Iqbal)

Today in our class we read a book named “Iqbal”. The book was about children slaves, who were working in a carpet factory, from dusk till dawn in Pakistan. The book was actually quite interesting. This book was a real story that was fictionalized and translated into English. I think our teacher chose this book for us to read because it was about our U.O.I. (unit of inquiry). In our U.O.I. we are learning about child rights and their opportunities. I learned a lot of things in this book. The most important thing I learned today was that children all over the world are different, depending on where you live. For me the hardest part of this book was reflecting on it, that is what I am doing right now, because there were so much happening in this book, that it is so hard to reflect on it. What I want to learn more about in our unit is what it is like to be working in a brick factory. I think it would be the worst thing that could happen. What helped me was when the teacher told us what word means what. But the problem was there were a lot of students talking when the teacher was reading, so it was a little hard to understand and hard to hear. That’s all I have to reflect on.

Today Michael Salinger and Sara Holbrook came to show us the poems they wrote. They showed us a whole bunch of poems, they even wrote some poems that explains meanings of hard words, then two students used actions and acted it out. He told us to say the word that he said after him and it was funny, but my favorite poem was the zombies evacuate the school poem it was even funnier. It was pretty fun and it lasted a whole hour long, it was way better than doing poetry.

Winter Concert

Tonight at 6:00, we are going to do a winter concert in the LLAC. The winter concert will last for an hour an a half, and most of the time we will be waiting for our turn to perform. I think it will be the worst thing ever, partly because there were hundreds and hundreds of audiences, thanks to Mr. Marshall Shaw. It turned out not as bad as I thought it would be, but it was still really scary and boring, thank you Mr. Marshall Shaw.

My Christmas Holiday

On the first week of my holiday, I went to Sapporo with my mom, dad, brother, sister, and my brother’s friend, to ski in Niseko Village. The hotel room that we lived in was like a house, it even had two floors. We did not ski on the first day because we got too tired, and it was night time. So I played my PSP and IPAD with my brother and his friend. Then we went out to eat, then we went to sleep. The next day we woke up at 9:00, and went directly to ski. We skied for a couple of hours, but luckily we did not need to line up for a long time, every time we took the chairlift up. Unluckily we went to the advanced run by accident, so it was really scary, even scarier than an roller coaster. Then by the time we got back to the hotel it was already night time, so we went out and ate a crab, and some sushi. We skied for five more days, then returned to Hong Kong. The next trip we went to was Beijing, I went with my mom, dad,  brother,  sister, my sister’s boyfriend, and my friend. We also went there to ski, because we wanted to ski again. We also have a house there because we always like to go to Beijing.  The bad thing is that it takes an whole hour to get to the ski resort, from our house. Another bad thing is the ski resort only opens for a few hours, so we can only ski for a few hours. My sister’s boyfriend Michael is not really good at skiing because he never skied before, and my friend Anson is not really good at snowboarding because he only snowboarded one time be fore. It was really fun, and the best part was when we went on the sledge, on the ski mountain. We did it a couple of times, because it was really fun. Then I drove a snowmobile for an hour, it was lots of fun. When we were about to go back to our house, we played a normal toboggan for two times then we left. We skied for a couple more days than we had to return to Hong Kong for Christmas. I got a lot of video games for Christmas the games I got was really fun. I also got a driving wheel to play my car games on the PS3. A lot of relatives came over for two days, it was a really fun Christmas.

I feel it is hopeless to be surrounded by thousands and thousands of big boxes of stuff, waiting to be sorted and then delivered. It also feels boring to be stuck in the middle of a trillion useless boxes. Also it is out of control to be surrounded by so many enormous boxes that are waiting to be delivered.

Perspective

Perspective means your point of view or opinion. Perspective is a word that is used in articles and stories. First person perspective is the character in the news article or the story, writing about himself. Third person perspective is the person writing the article or the story. The third person does not always know the real story, because the third person was not there or even if he was there, he will just be a bystander. Different people have different perspectives because everybody, has there own opinion. You can tell what someone else’s perspective is, by asking them, seeing what write about things, and seeing what they do. This is what I so far know about perspective.

Reflection of the Video Wa$ted

Today we watched a video in our classroom we watched a video called wasted. The movie started like this a family of four that were burning trash. Then suddenly a group of people were asking them to stop. They told them the trash did not just disappear they said it turned into dioxin that kills up to 42 people a year and it pollutes the air. And they called them eco criminals and also called them guilty. They also told them how to be eco friendly in many ways and told them their eco foot print was 153 times bigger the size of their house. After 3 weeks they got 1500$ by being more eco friendly. That was what the story was about. I think the movie was short because it only lasted for 20 minuets long.

Our new unit of inquiry has just started, it is about solid wastes management and how it affect societies and the environment. The things I already know about this unit are, solid wastes are basically just waste that is solid, but it usually ends up in a landfill or a dump.That is what I already know about this unit. What I do not know about this unit is how solid wastes affect societies and the environment, and what is the difference of a landfill and a dump.

Cyber Safety

On Wednesday November 10 our whole class went to the LLAC in our school to listen to a guest speaker. The guest speaker talked to us about cyber safety. Then she showed us about what a digital footprint is, it is a foot print that shows things about you. We also watched some videos of cyber safety in her presentation. Unfortunately it was terribly boring. The bad news was the next day we needed to go again. This time she showed us about cyber bullying and how to stay safe, that was terribly unreasonable. But luckily we never needed to go again.

My October Break

In the Octobehk_00135r break I went to Ocean Park with my sister and her boy friend. We went on the roller coaster and played some mini games. A few days later, I went to my dads factory in China to play with the children there. When we left, the driver drove us to a car that we called to pick us up. But we were 20 minutes late so the driver that we called said his car crashed and left us. When we called the car again it said it would take 20 minutes. But it took 40 minutes for the car to come. So when we got back home it was night time.

My Year so Far in Grade 5

So far in Grade 5 we learned about matter and materials, we made a prezi on a new communication technology and explained it, we were put into different classes and did a poster in a group, and we also started our new unit of inquiry that is about solid wastes. So far I think Grade 5 is way better than grade 4. Because we do not get homework, we do not do so much work and it is a lot easier.
