UEFA CHAMPIONS!

On Sunday, May 26, 2013 Bayern Munich have been crowned Europe’s champions when they defeated Dortmund 1-2. The game was about to end 1-1 when Arjen Robben was able to score in the 89th minute. The game was also the last game Jupp Heyncke’s last game as Bayern Munich manager. All Dortmund fans were pretty disappointed at the end of the game and all of the Dortmund players were crying. Now we know the best team in Europe for 2013 is Bayern Munich. The next final will come in 2014.

Exhibition Action

We finally finished the exhibition! But that doesn’t mean all of the work isn’t done yet. The whole 6th Grade has to take actions as a part of the inquiry cycle. The inquiry cycle has 6 stages which include Tuning In, Finding Out, Sorting Out, Going Further, Drawing Conclusions and Taking Action. Taking Actions is the same thing as making people aware of the situation, but that’s just the basic. We also have to make them learn about issues that are going on in the world. People in the past Exhibition have been taking action by making posters, handing out flyers and I remember one group protesting about idling. The Action I chose to do was a P.S.A (Public Service Announcement). It makes people aware of what other countries are doing with their money, spending it all on things that aren’t necessary (more houses, planes etc). Greece did that and paid the price for it, now they’re economy is corrupted and they’re rioting about unfair changes that the governments are doing. Luckily the financial crises aren’t happening in Hong Kong for now. My second group member of the Exhibition (Atom 13) has agreed to help me with the action. The P.S.A isn’t ready so you can’t see it yet but we’ll get to it. My action isn’t really good because it’s a common action, but Atom 13 and I are presenting infront of an actual class. In the ladder of participation I would rank my action 5. Once the action has been taken our Exhibition journey has been completed.

This week we have presented our booths for the exhibition. The hardest part was to stand up for more than 2 hours. It was super tiring but I explained financial crises to a lot people, including preps. We felt good because we had spread word that financial crises were happening and we had given a few tips to some people on spending and saving your money. Tonight will be the time when we have to explain all of the information to the adults, which is tricky because they know much more about finance and they’ll ask super hard questions about financial crises. We’re not allowed to sit down or eat during the exhibition so we have to eat something at home. All in all I think we’re going to be super excited before and super tired after.

Match

During the Easter break Bayern Munich beat Hamburg 9:2. The match took place in Muenchen in the Allianz Arena. During the match I ate a hot dog and sweet popcorn, the hot dog was the best.

Bayern: Claudio Pizaro (4), Xherdan Shaqiri, Bastin Schweinsteiger, Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben (2)

Hamburg: Jeffrey Bruma, Heiko Westermann

I was watching the match live (not on T.V.) and I enjoyed it. I had never done something more fun than that for a long time. My favorite part was when 2 goals were scored in less than 2 minutes! I couldn’t even see it. It was full of a lot of action. I hope I can see another match one day. In total I’ve seen 5 real soccer matches live, but this one was the best yet.

A week with non-stop activities!

This week was full of activities and cool surprises that were fun and not fun. For fun the exhibition started. Everyone was so excited for starting the biggest project in the PYP (primary year programme) grade. The exhibition theme was where we are in place and time. In the exhibition all of us have to have groups, the groups were based on our interests (subjects). My group was with Atom 13, Elite 18 and Elite 23. Our subject was Finance/Economics and the main focus was economic crisis. We started it and we got off to a good start. Now for the not fun part, swimming started. We all thought it would be bad but it turns out it was okay, but our P.E. was cancelled.

In music we did some more songs but nothing different. We practiced some more conducting and the same songs all over again. I think I’m starting to get really good with the clarinet and I can play the songs fluently. But I’m tired of La Bamba (one of our songs).

In French we did some tests. I think I didn’t do well on the written test and the oral exam. I’m pretty bad at French and that’s all I can say.

In Chinese we started new units on sickness words and other words. We had 2 tests or also known as dictations and I got an Exceeding (A+) and meeting (somewhere around B+ to C-). We also learned about the PYP summer trip programme to Bei-jing. The programme is optional but it looks real fun. There’s a water park, laser tag place that looks like a war zone, pizza and other cool features, and the hotels are 4 stars. But I can’t go. Because I’m on holiday at that time.

Before I end this blog post I want to congratulate myself for asking good questions to myself for the exhibition. And I want to tell you about PI day. PI day is the day we celebrate the number π. The number π goes on forever and nobody can stop counting. Here are the numbers for π by the way (I found it on the internet):

3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197169399375105820974944592307816406286 208998628034825342117067982148086513282306647093844609550582231725359408128481.

And thats just the tip of the iceberg. You can look at all the numbers on this website:

I like π

So that’s how I spent my week in school.

The Beginning of March

March has already started! This weeks was stressful because we’ve started our Summative Assessment in U.O.I. In P.E. we put in some portfolio work and played some more badminton. In French we did some work sheets and in Music we practiced some more complicated songs. There was so much going on this week at our school. I’m so glad that the weekends are coming.

In the Summative, we have to write a report as a government official about a civic or also known as a public space. Everyone has chosen a specific public space, most kids chose a civic space near their home so they won’t have to travel to inconvenient spots or places. I chose the Sun Yat San Memorial Park. It’s roughly 31.8 kilometeres away. I’ve only taken some pictures of the place and written some prior knowledge and observations. To me I presume that a lot of people come on the weekdays to play sports.

In physical education we played more badminton. As usual it was super fun. I played really well even though I thought I would stink in this specific sport. Now I realize that I can do real good serves and good rallies. We also put some fitness approvals into our portfolios to show our parents how good or bad we are in the fitness tests which are the beep tests, the 12 minute runs, the sit up test and the standing long jump test.

In music we played these easy or hard songs: Surprising symphony, Jingle bells, Frere Jaques, Mexican jumping beans, Snake charmer, Blues adventure, La bamba, Can Can and Alouette. I could play only some of them. The rest of the songs were either pretty hard or ÎMPÖSÍBŁË!

This week was pretty rough, but next week is a new week.

This Week…

This week was not a long one, but it was a good week. We mainly focused on the unit and math. We also had P.E. and Music which was also fun. In U.O.I. we were focusing on public spaces that were good for the people and how they related to our unit concepts which are: Connection, responsibility and form. In math it was fractions, decimals and percentage we’re focusing on, we also got prepared for the WORLD MATHS DAY contest which is on March 3. In P.E. we started our badminton unit and we learned some new songs for our instrument in Music.

In U.O.I. we did an activity with multiple tasks which we had to record in our process journal. Identifying the criteria for a good public space was the first task, the next task was finding 3 public spaces that have the concepts, the third task was to identify the good characteristics of a public space. We finished the first half at home, but the second half was supposed to be done in school because it involves a project we’ve done in the past when we started the unit.

In math we started doing some fractions worksheets. We had to do the fractions first, then we would do the decimals and percentages later. The addition, multiplication and division was a piece of cake. The comparing fractions was okay (not too easy not too hard) but the subtraction was the part where I struggled. The highlight of math was the world maths day practice. I beat Anthony but Samir beat me. Our mode of operation was mainly division and multiplication.

Badminton was very fun because there was a lot of action and running going on. At first I thought it wouldn’t be fun but in the end I wished it never ended. We practiced our rallies and we played some matches (singles and doubles). I was beaten by Samir and I beat Anthony AGAIN! :D Hahahaha.

In music we practiced some songs. Most of them were a bit too complicated but I could eventually play some songs, but not professionally like the real Clarinetists. It was also fun to learn new ways to play music. This week we practiced conducting a song in basic ways by waving our fingers in these directions: Up, down, left and right. Time flew by so quickly that we didn’t have enough time to clean and sanitize our instruments.

This week I was very organized because I color coded all my subject folders and all the work that goes into it.

All in all it was a very good and short week, because it was only 3 days.
