Volunteer Work at School

by 043048 on May 13, 2013

Last week, a few of my other classmates from Grade 7 stayed at school and did volunteer work. We helped in the Grade 2 section with classwork and other “housekeeping” things. During this time, I think I demonstrated 2 different learner profile attributes, Caring and Knowledgeable.

I demonstrated Caring by helping out the Grade 2′s with some of their work. Many of them were really happy we were there to help them, as they were a little confused about the instructions. Another example is that I guided this little boy while he was doing work. He was a little behind because he lost all his previous work, so he had to redo everything. He was really glad that I was there to help him because that made the process a lot more efficient.

I also demonstrated the attribute Knowledgeable by expressing the knowledge I know to the Grade 2′s. I taught the Grade 2′s some things on their project. I also explained how things work to them when they asked me questions. For example, I taught them things from using the computer to making Mother’s Day cards, and they were all really happy that I was able to help them.

How did you show personal responsibility during your volunteer work?

While I was helping out, I had to be responsible. I had to be responsible for my tasks, whatever I was assigned to do, I did it on time and correctly. I also had to be responsible for my time, I tried hard not to be late and during my volunteer work, I really felt like a real teacher, I felt like I had to be punctual so no one would be slowed down because of me.

Did you get to know someone new during your volunteer work?

During my volunteer work, I got to know some people from my grade that I haven’t really talked to before. During our work, we would talk and get to know each other better. I also got to meet teachers from Grade 2. They were all really nice and were really happy that we were there to help out. Other than meeting teachers and classmates, I also got to know some of the Grade 2 students, they were all really happy that we were there to help them out. During our volunteer work, I really felt like we bonded, and I am glad I got to meet all of them.

KMT court case iFolio Reflection

by 043048 on April 29, 2013

Please reflect on the court case including:

1)    Pictures/videos from the class website

Audrey, Me and Katherine presenting our exhibit.

2)    Do you agree with the jury’s verdict? Why or why not? Include at least 5 facts from evidence that was presented during the trial.

I agree with the jury’s verdict because I believe KMT is true, but our points during the trial did not support KMT, which helps our side of the case.  Here our some facts we have from our evidence:

1) Some liquids do not have a definite shape (ex. Water and Sprite)

2) Heat creates Kinetic energy

3) Salt does not effect the temperature of liquids

4) All particles are in constant motion

5) Matter is made up of small particles.

3)    What was your job? Explain how you fulfilled your responsibilities.

During the trial I was a lawyer with Cyrus and Vincent. We were on the prosecution side and we were trying to prove that KMT is not true. I fulfilled all my responsibilities as a lawyer. I made questions for any cross examination questions, I also made opening and closing statements.

4)    If you could do a different job during the court case, which would you have volunteered for and why?

If I could choose a different job during this court case, I think I would’ve chosen to be a jury member because I want to be able to make the decision of whether KMT is true or not (even though we know that it IS true).

5)    Explain one or more thing you learned about KMT during the investigations

One thing I learned during the investigations is how to work investigations/experiments efficiently. We’ve done a lot of experiments throughout this whole investigation so I have been a lot better at preparing all the materials and following the procedures.

6)    Explain how you improved as a scientist during the KMT investigations and the trial.

I think I improved a lot as a scientist after the KMT investigations because I learned to consider about both sides and about the result. I was on the prosecution side of the case, and whenever I find some kind of new evidence, I would have to think whether the defence side of the case can prove me wrong.

Fractions and Decimals

by 043048 on April 15, 2013

Where would you fall on the stress and learning graph? Why?

I think I would fall on 3 because I had a good time learning this unit. I wasn’t stressed or anything and I had a good amount of time for learning everything.

What was challenging about this unit? What was easy?

The most challenging part about this unit is the decimals part because I was never really good at decimals, but after this unit, I learned a lot more about it and I have more skills now. There isn’t really a easy part of this unit. Everything I learned or did was a good level for me, simple enough yet challenging at times.

How was your effort in class and at home reflected in your assessment results?

I think my effort in class and at home is fine and on the right track. My assessment results were a little bit above average and I am really really glad about it, but for next time, I can do a little better and that would lead to even more effort during class time and at home.

What activities did you like in this unit?

There weren’t special activities I liked in this unit but if I had to choose one, I would choose the tutorial videos because I am a visual learner and the videos really help explain things to me.

D.E.A.D. Day – Humanities

How I feel about what we did today…

I liked how we got to watch the documentaries that the Grade 8′s made last year. It really gave me some ideas, inspiration and goals on how to work on my documentary. I really liked the whole idea of this documentary on Hong Kong’s heritage. It gives us a chance to learn more about our city’s culture and heritage. But overall, I really liked all of the activities today.

I wish we could’ve watched more of the Grade 8′s documentaries. It would give us more experience and ideas on working on our documentaries.

What if we were able to make a behind the scenes video on our documentary? I know we have the website but we can also have a video to support our evidence.
