Experience Week (Thailand)

by 043038 on May 15, 2013

During May 6th to May 11th we went to Ban Thaton, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. This part of Thailand is very different from other places in Thailand because there weren’t much Tourist Attractions and there weren’t as many things we can do outside of the resort. We stayed at a resort called Maekok River Village Resort.  This trip was an experience to know more about other cultures, and it was varied in nature. There was also a trip to Beijing, but not many people went there. There were some important rules that we had to remember throughout the trip. We weren’t allowed to touch or pass an object over the head of a Thai and when we greet people we had to put both hands together with fingertips somewhere between the chest and forehead, and give a slight bow when saying “Sawatdee Kaa” (Hello).

Everyday we had the same routine, we would wake up at 6:30am then eat breakfast at 7:10am. Then at 8:30am we would meet at the gym where the whole grade goes together and the teachers would announce some information. Then after, we had our first activity of the day. At 12:00pm, we had our lunch and at 1:30pm we had our second activity. Then we had our break time at 4:30 and dinner at 6:00pm then night games for an hour. Every night we needed to be at our room by 9:00pm and lights off by 10:00pm.

The first day of the trip we arrived at around 5:00pm at the resort and we settled down and started talking about what would happen around. There were 3 student villas and there were around 6 people in each room. Throughout the whole trip, there were 8 activities, 2 per day. The first activity of the second day was Market & Thai Cooking Class. We made mixed vegetables and green curry with chicken, which tasted so good. We bought our ingredients in the market. The market in Chiang Mai compared to the markets in Hong Kong were very different, what they sold was very different and the place was very different. The second activity of the day was Rock Climbing. At the beginning, I was very scared and nervous but later on when I was on the wall, I actually liked it, but it was very tiring and challenging.

The third day after breakfast, our first activity was Kayaking. Kayaking was very fun because I’ve never done it before and we had to challenge ourselves by flipping the boat around and stand on top of it and try to paddle while standing which was very hard to do. After lunch our next activity was Jungle Survival, even the name of that already makes me scared. It makes me scared because you have to do everything by yourself, you need to make your own shelter, food equipment and fire. Overall, that day was fun.

The fourth day was a very tiring day, we had to go to a school near the resort and plan activities with the students there and we also had a hill tribe hike. It was very fun and interesting playing games with the kids there. We played parachute, soccer, paper planes and splat. I really liked these kids, they were very cute and very enthusiastic. After visiting the school we also had a hill tribe hike, which was very hot and tiring, but it was worth it because we got to see a village that was very different from the Hong Kong culture. The houses were made our of wood and most of the kids had to take a shower at their lake. Throughout the hike we went to the hill tribe village and we visited the temple, which was very interesting.

The fifth day was kind of fun and kind of not fun. The fun part was learning how to build bricks, which was not what I expected and it was very different from what I thought would look like. My group made 17 bricks and we were so close to being the bricksters but the other group beat us by 1. The not kind of fun part was the confidence course because it was scary. I thought it was very hard to pass the course because I can’t go through pain and I’m not strong. There are 4 parts of the course in total and I could only pass the first part, which was upsetting.

The last day, we had the Mini Olympics. We racing other people in other groups. I didn’t really like this activity because I thought it was kind of boring until we had to pretend like we were chickens and we had to give birth to an egg. I think everyone did great because they were all funny.

Through out this trip, I think I was a risk taker because I didn’t want to do the confidence course but I still tried and tried but I still didn’t pass the whole course. I was also a risk taker because I wanted to give up in the middle of climbing up the wall because I was scared to fall, but then I still climbed up the wall and I thank my friends for encouraging me to climb higher and higher. I was also open minded because I always try to do something new. For example, trying different ways to climb up the wall and trying to do things differently, such as trying Thai curry.

Overall this trip was the best trip I ever had with my friends from school. I got to make new friends and do things I’ve never done before. Now, I know how lucky I am and know how those little kids live and I will appreciate what I have.

For some reasons people can’t comment on my post, but they sent me there comments. So here they are:

I liked how you included what you did during the trip, including your thoughts and examples.
I wish that you included more reflection because it was more of a recount. Also, you might want to include your strengths and weaknesses.
Overall, I liked how you included your thoughts and examples to make your point clear. Awesome :)

I think that you could add to your conclusion to make it more detailed and so your readers will understand what you learnt more. You could also add to the Mini Olympics paragraph, and some of the other activities because people who didn’t go won’t really understand what you did and what the instructions were. I liked your pictures because they fit in with what you were saying but you could add mroe captions to your photos to make them more clear. I think that you did a good job with the introduction, it was clear and easy to understand, and it was nice to read about the rules in Thailand. – Jasmine

I like you post, but it seems like you have done more of a recount than a reflection. You should elaborate on what two learner profile attributes you showed. – Chance

KMT Court Reflection

by 043038 on May 2, 2013

Over the past few weeks, we have been doing a lot of different experiments to prove the KMT (Kinetic Molecular Theory) is true or not true. Recently we went to court and the result was KMT was true. There were two teams Prosecution Team and the Defense Team.

I believe that the jury’s verdict was right because if the KMT wasn’t true there won’t be a lot of scientific facts about it and it won’t be made up at the first place if it wasn’t true. Some of the evidence that can prove the KMT is true is the M&M experiment which is to prove the higher the temperature the faster it would melt. There were also 3 other experiments which are the Iron Cereal, Food Colouring and Evaporation all of those experiments are all on the same line to prove that molecules does affect the timing.

My job was a lawyer and my responsibility was to ask the expect witness questions. But at the end I didn’t ask anyone any questions because some lawyers already said the questions I wanted to ask or suddenly the expert witness was also the lawyer and the lawyer also became the expert witness which made me really confused.

If I could do a different job during the court case I would’ve volunteered to be a jury because you could get a better understanding of what is going on and you can vote for the KMT is guilty or the KMT is not guilty.

Another thing I learned during the trail was understanding how a bubble works which the Prosecution Team brought up to prove that the KMT was not true. I would need to improve on being organize and re-looking at the evidence that were submitted.

Fractions and Decimals Unit

by 043038 on April 12, 2013

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been learning about fractions and decimals. This unit has made me learn better on how to convert decimals to fractions or fractions to decimals. Through the rating of stress level, 1 as easy and 5 as challenging. I think I am a 3, being relaxed. There weren’t challenging things that we learned but multiplying, dividing and converting decimals and fractions were easy. Some things I did to reflect on my assessment result was to look over what we did in class and remember how to explain how decimal works. For example when multiplying decimals why does the decimal have to have that many value. Some activities I liked in this unit was doing the station practice activity.

Algebraic Patterns

by 043038 on January 25, 2013

Over the past few weeks we have been working on Algebraic Patterns, which fits in the AOI ‘Human Ingenuity’. I liked this unit because it’s a new thing that I learned and I learned a lot of strategies to find out the rule for the questions. Some things I disliked about this unit was that there was a pop quiz and I didn’t have time to practice, so when it was the assessment I practiced a lot which didn’t really help. I also think I learned really well at finding out the next pattern on the chart. I think it is important to study patterns because it helps us in life. Overall, I thought this unit was useful.

Bird Assessment

by 043038 on January 24, 2013

Recently we were assigned to make a bird that was never found. We had to talk about it’s environment, it’s structural adaptations and it’s behavioral adaptations. This assessment was very interesting because we got to make our own birds. My bird’s name is called Camo Bird.

Some of the strengths throughout this unit was using the right colour for the bird and thinking about it’s structural adaptations and it’s environment. The behavioral adaptations were hard to form because most of the birds have different behaviors.

At first. I wanted to build my bird but I realized that I won’t finish it on time so I drew my bird. It was quite hard to think of the design of the bird because I don’t really know how my bird should look like. I used my time wisely because I first finished my chart about the adaptations then I started drawing my bird. If I were to start over again, I would try to build my bird next time because it would be more attractive.

Shi Huang Di

by 043038 on January 9, 2013

Over the past few weeks we had different tasks for the unit, Shi Huang Di, I would give a 3 out of 5 for this unit. We had assessments such as the Note Cards, the Oral Presentation, the Paragraph and the Essay. Some skills that I learned were how to use the hamburger method to write an essay because the organization of the writing is different from the English writing method. I also used organization skills to be time managed and to know what each person in the group is typing or saying about. We also used noodle tools for our citation and our notecards and it was very helpful because it helped us keep what and when we used the website.

The Hong Kong Lorax

by 043038 on November 20, 2012

Recently we watched a video called “The Lorax”. If you haven’t, I suggest you do. In the movie it tells you that trees are being cut down to make clothes. While that is happening, someone is making money out of them. Our new unit is about environments. Lots of environments in Hong Kong are being destroyed. Who is speaking up for the animals and natural features in our planet?

The environments is always changing and we don’t even notice. All of the plants and animals and landfeatures don’t have a voice, they can’t speak up for themselves. Imagine one day you went home and the Government tells you that you have to move because they are making something else over your building. How would you feel? That is now happening to the animals and the natural features.

We can take action to help them.
