Book Club – Nation

Over the last month, we have been reading a book by Terry Pratchett called “Nation”, which relates to our unit How the World Works. The central idea of this unit is: The continual evolution of Earth’s natural features affects life on the planet. The book is about a tsunami that destroys a village on an island, only leaving one survivor named Mau. Meanwhile, a ship from the UK shipwrecks near it and drops off it’s sole survivor: a girl named Daphne. They try to protect a small band of refugees. Our teacher assigned us a task to write a blog post describing one or more of the main characters and what learner profile attributes they show. I have chosen to focus on Mau, who is the native of that island.

Mau is a risk-taker and caring because on page 110 of the book, he risks his own life to try to help the newborn baby get some milk. he goes up to a mother pig, which can be very dangerous and he sucks the pigs milk and spits it into a bottle. He also perseveres because after the tsunami, he continues and tries to rebuild his lost civilization. He is not such a good communicator because it is hard for him to communicate with Daphne, who only speaks English.
