BOL: Process Journal Reflecting

Bucket O’ Learning – Week of Jan. 7 – 11

For Bucket O’ Learning this week, I have reflected in my process journal about the sessions with Mrs. DC. In these reflections I have written a bit about what we have done, what I have learnt, what I realized through activities, what I find challenging, what I still don’t understand etc. While writing my reflections, I was also able to realize what I actually know or don’t know. This helps me because then I can figure out what I still need to learn or don’t need to research about. In one of my reflections, I used sticky notes to write down some big inquiry questions and supporting questions. I think the sticky notes makes the reflection more “interesting” – not just plain writing. I want to try to use more “Da Vinci Style Journaling”, even in my process journal.

Connections and/or Growing Understandings

Date of Task: October 16 – October 18
Task: To reflect on connections and/or growing understanding
Purpose: To ‘see’ your learning, see what works, what doesn’t, what path you’re on

“The application of elements and principles determines the success of an artistic composition.”

These few weeks, we have started the new Unit of Inquiry, How We Express Ourselves. Through these few days,  have gained a better understanding of the elements and principles of design. After doing an investigation into it (analyzing bulletin boards, researching, creating a poster) I have learnt:

What an element is

  • Involved  in an art piece

What a principle is

  • Rule

The elements of design

  • Point – point of focus
  • Line – vertical, diagonal, horizontal
  • Shape – enclosed area
  • Value – lightness or darkness
  • Texture – how the surface feels like
  • Colour – e.g. blue, purple, red, ornage, green
  • Direction – vertical, diagonal, horizontal
  • Size – big or small
  • Form – three dimensional shapes

The principles of design

  • Balance – pleasing arrangement
  • Perspective – created through arrangements of objects
  • Harmony – combining similar effects
  • Unity – feeling of harmony
  • Movement – object seems to be moving
  • Variety – e.g. different shapes
  • Gradation – blending of colours
  • Repetition – repeated elements
  • Contrast – e.g. black and white
  • Dominance – gives the painting interest
  • Emphasis – one particular part stands out
  • Pattern – repetition
  • Proportion – parts relate well with each other
  • Rhythm – one or more of the elements are repeated

How you can determine if an artistic composition is successful or not

  • Look at how they used the elements and principles of design

Before this investigation, I had never thought about the elements and principles. Also, I had thought the definition of elements and principles were very similar. Now I know, the difference, and why we need to use the elements and principles of art/design to create a successful artistic composition.

Overall, I gained a better understanding of art after these few days.

Our First Unit: How We Express Ourselves

“Developments in communication technology create different types of connections between people and their audience.”

This week, we finished our first unit, How We Express Ourselves. This unit teaches us about Communication Technology. I found this unit very interesting because I have never looked at Communication Technology that deeply. I learnt a lot through this unit.

I learnt the history of communication technology and found that some tools were invented a long time ago, but got developed through out the years. For example, the computer got developed a lot. A long time ago, the computer was as big as a room, now, the computer can fit on your desk or your lap. I also learnt that communication technology is actually very important, because without it, the only way to communicate with each other will be to talk face to face. I think that will limit our ways of communicating a lot.

I liked this unit because it helped me realize how much technology our world used and how important it was to us. I also liked it because it is something that I am interested in and would like to research about it. Also, I liked it because I learnt some new websites like, PREZI, Issuu, Aviary, etc. PREZI is a website that lets you present information while Issuu is a website for sharing work by using a book. Aviary is a website that lets you edit your photos.

For our summative assessment, we had to create a new communication technology that would help people and their audience connect and then present it on a PREZI. My communication technology was called ‘Touch and Take’, a pair of glasses that can take, send and project videos. Through this task, I learnt how to use PREZI and how almost every technology can still be developed. Also, I learnt what a good presentation includes and how to make it interesting. For example, using fonts, colours and shapes that match your topic, will make your presentation more interesting and attractive. I used different fonts, shapes and pictures to present my summative assessment, and used different shades of green.

Overall, I think I learnt a lot throughout this unit.

My 5 Poems


Spring‘ is my favourite poem because it gives a relaxing image and makes me feel very relaxed and joyful. I also like this because it is a Haiku and I think Haiku’s are very unique. Haiku’s are unique in my opinion because they are only about the four seasons of the year and the four seasons make me feel calm. They are also special because they only have three lines but can have a huge meaning in it. I also like this poem because spring is my favourite season, being the season with fresh grass, flowers and trees coming back after a cold winter. This poem uses two literary devices that I like using: simile and personification. The simile is ‘Leaves as green as grass‘ and the personification is ‘Flowers colouring the world‘. I think personification is a fun literary device to use because you can use your imagination and creativity in it. I hope you like this poem, too!

My Prezi…Touch and Take

The camera, glasses and projector, inspired this tool, the ‘Touch and Take’. The camera for taking pictures and the projector to project pictures and videos.

It is a pair of glasses that can take, send and project pictures and videos.  This technology can help to connect people and their audience by projecting and sending pictures and videos instantly to your friends or family. The picture can be sent to their email, and can be viewed quickly.

‘Touch and Take’ is useful for the future because if you take a picture or video and you really like it, you won’t have to wait to send it or to show other people. For example, when you go on vacation and you take a beautiful picture, you can just instantly view or send it, not having to wait until you get the picture on to your computer. In addition, you only have to put your finger to the sensor to capture a view.

My communication tool has a remote that comes with a slide-out keyboard. You can use that to send pictures or use it to go to the next or previous picture when projecting. When you want to take a picture, you just touch the sensor. When you want to take a video, you leave your finger on the sensor until the video is over. It takes pictures and videos of what you see so it will be simple to use. I like it because you can send pictures and videos instantly.
