Design Final Heart Valve

My chosen initial heart valve design (in B02) was vastly different to the heart valve design I based my actual heart valve prototype off, the reason for this is because the initial design wouldn’t have even met the requirement of only letting water flow one way. Therefore in order for me to even meet that basic requirement, I had to switch designs (from the design in B02 to the design in B03). However even that was not good enough since this design featured a flap to stop the valve from having backflow, but this flap was too complicated to make and therefore render my heart valve a failure. As a result, I had to simplify the complicated design and turn it into something that I could work with, which was the valve that I created in the end. When brainstorming ideas for creating the new and feasible design, I played around with different materials (i.e. aluminium, rubber, wood, plastic, etc.) before an idea finally popped into my head. During the creation process of this new and feasible valve idea, I was unsure of many things (i.e. materials, procedure, final outcome in terms of looks, etc.) however I was able to overcome this with my ingenuity and problem-solving skills accompanied with past experimentation with different types of materials. Furthermore, I also got feedback from my peers and teachers for what I could improve on my heart valve. This feedback has played an important part in the final heart valve, especially in it’s aesthetics; because it was my teachers suggestion to create a more realistic heart valve to attract more Gr. 7’s by painting the valve to represent the heart more.

Design – Making Heart Valves

Today (August 25th, 2016) we Grade 10 students were introduced to our new science/design project of creating a artificial heart valve for both education purposes and possibly real-life medical application. After a brief but comprehensive introduction we brainstormed things we knew about the project, things we needed to know to succeed in this project and how we can find these things (Fig. 1). Then were given a period of time to create a working artificial heart valve that would only allow the flow of blood to be one-way, with materials like balloons, small PVC pipes, tape, rubber bands, etc.

Through this task, I learned that patience, perseverance, creativity and problem solving are key attributes to have when designing something from scratch. During the initial brainstorming stage for the valve, I tried to think of a complex design for a heart valve as this was a complex problem. After I could not think of anything I could do with the materials I had, and listened to what my teammates ideas were, I realised that the design did not have to be complex at all, and that it could be something as simple as a PVC tube with a plastic flap.

At first we struggled to get the design to allow the water to flow only one way, but after a few attempts and experimentation, we finally were able to get a working model even though it was not the most visually appealing valve (Fig. 2).

If I could do this exercise again, I would have liked to have liked to have figured out a way to increase the speed at which the water flowed out of our valve, because the water merely trickled out of our heart valve. I would have also liked to have created a better system to stop the water from flowing the other way, because even though ours was successful, it was rudimentary and inconsistent at times. For example in Figure 2, we tried to add on a glove for water collection, but this instead hampered the opening/closing process of the plastic flap acting as the valve.

Final Graphic Novel ContributionFrom this task, I have learned how to use illustrator and Evernote to complete the tasks in all 4 criteria. I have also learned ways in which I can keep track of my time, in order to meet the deadlines of all of the tasks. This task has taught me that visuals help reinforce a person’s understanding of a subject better than words, because visuals give the reader a base at which to start their thinking process, which will then allow the readers to imagine the scene playing out in their head. In this task, technology such as illustrator helps convey my message to the audience, through allowing the audience to visually interpret the scene in their own way as well as allow the audience to see the character’s relationships, thoughts and other details that might be too complex to understand in terms of words. Therefore these visuals will help the audience to understand the meaning of the words in the novel, as well as the possible significance of the scene.

I believe that visuals can change people’s perception of a scene, for they can give more background context than words. For the audience can see what is happening around the character and use this information to make an informed decision, whereas in the novel, the author sticks to the perception of Jim and does not pay attention to any of the other things happening in the scene.

In this task, I have ran into many challenges such as, short due dates, lack of people taking the survey, etc. However these challenges were overcame through perseverance, good time management and thorough communication with my peers. If I were to do this project again, I would try and finish each task as soon as possible, and if possible, start the next task sooner rather than later.

This is a digital design of the Apple Packaging that we designed earlier today. It is not an exact replica of the actual package, but it is close enough without being way off the mark. Geometry can allow us to reduce our carbon by allowing us to figure out what kind of shapes we should use that both allow us to make an appealing package for a product, while using the least amount of un-recyclable materials. It also allows us to make informed decisions on what materials should be used to make the packaging.

Criteria for a Good Package:

1. Easy to Open: The Package is Sealed and will therefore ensure that the apple inside will remain fresh for a while longer. Although one must have scissors to open the package, and this might be a problem if one does not have scissors available to them.

2. Secure: Because the Package is sealed, the package inside will not fall out by accident.

3. Contents should be Obvious: the package is sealed and is therefore not obvious to the buyer

4. Ergonomic: This package is not ergonomic because one needs scissors to open the package, and scissors are most likely not carried on person at all times of the day.

5. Protective: It somewhat protects the apple inside, but because it’s paper, the protection is not the best protection available.

6. Appropriate Size: The package is on it’s own lightweight, and it is small and compact. Therefore it is the minimal waste available, while being the appropriate size to store an apple.

7. Attractive: The package is somewhat attractive, for it has a somewhat comic appearance.

8. Light: The Package is made of paper and is therefore very light and does not add any excess weight.

9.  Durable: The Package is very durable, it was tested by dropping it and the apple. In the end, the apple was still in one piece and the package retained it’s shape.
