Exhibition ACTION

by Stargirl on May 2, 2013

For our exhibition, we have to take action, SO I decided to do 2 because the first one wasn’t enough to me.

My first action was doing 4 paintings with my group, each representing a different rite of passage. We wanted people to analyze it, think of how it connects to you and how a rite of passage may have affected your life somehow. We got it done before the exhibition so we put it up in our booth and we explained what we did to the visitors. We’re trying to get it put up somewhere in the school so that other people can see it too. I think that the degree of participation that my action is is Number 7: Child-initiated and directed, because we thought of it ourselves and thought of our own ideas.

Here’s a photo of the paintings in our booth but it’s quite blurry:

I’m planning to do a second action, which will be done on the last day of school (June 11, 2013). My friend Karen’s going to help me, and we’ll be doing something special for the whole grade to congratulate them for going through a rite of passage and completing Grade 6. The reason that I’m not saying what it is is because Karen and I want it to be a surprise for the whole grade, because anyone from the grade can just come and read it, they can spread it to the whole grade, and then it won’t be a surprise anymore. I think that the degree of participation that my action is is Number 7 too: Child-initiated and directed, because our teacher actually thought of the general idea (congratulating people after they go through a rite of passage), but we thought of it in more detail; and we’re also going to do it ourselves.

Exhibition!!

by Stargirl on April 24, 2013

For these few weeks, I’ve been working on my exhibition so I didn’t really write any reflections…

So we had the PYP Exhibition and here’s the chosen logo by Jackie:

My group (which had 3 other people in it – 2 boys and 1 girl) investigated rites of passage. I thought that the hardest part was the research (or the Finding Out). I think the researching was challenging because we needed to have a reason to trust the site and have true information. This was sometimes hard because we were not allowed to use Wikipedia, answer sites and blogs. Those were usually the most useful things that came up after a google search. If it wasn’t from those categories then the answers weren’t very helpful. But after I was introduced to more resources that I could use, I gradually found more sources and it got better.

I know the teachers actually don’t want us to think in this way, but I personally think that the exhibition is like a big exam to use all the knowledge that we’ve learned before. The units that we did this year was actually helping us to be successful in the Exhibition – conflict resolution (for when we have conflicts with our group), art and design (for help with the booth), and a landform presentation (it was similar to the exhibition except we had a script, everyone presented together and we presented with a google presentation instead of a booth). So the teachers want us to think that it’s just another summative (which is true), but I think it’s bigger than that.

I think that the most interesting thing was how we all worked really well together. We each had our own strengths that can help the group, and we got the wrok done on time. On the last hour of the day where everything for our booth and our process journal needed to be done, my group was just sitting there and writing a nice easy group reflection, while almost everyone else was just running around, trying to get things done. I also was amazed at how I was the only person from 6A there and everyone else was from 6E.

Throughout the Exhibition process, I learned that I can be very quiet when it comes to me having to talk, and I also found out more strengths (or weaknesses) that I have: I want to be neat all the time and I’m a perfectionist. I want everything to be perfect and I keep thinking that what I do is bad and it can be improved.

Even though the Exhibition is almost over, I think that I still could’ve done more by getting out there and bringing people in to our booth, because when there was people passing by, I didn’t feel like walking up to them and talking to them. I just watched other people talk and I only talked to around 10 people overall during school hours.

One of the walls from our booth completely came down and fell so we had to stay during our class time to put the things back up and make it more secure. I hope it stays up for at least some more hours!! If not, I have NO IDEA of what we’re going to do.

And, it stayed! We were so relieved but the next day we had to take it all down so…why doesn’t it stay up when we want it to, but stays when we need to take it down?

Anyways, here’s some pictures of the process:

Keep on going, EVEN if it’s hard

by Stargirl on March 22, 2013

HEYHEY!!!

IM SO FREAKIN’ BOREEEEEEEEEED!!!!!!!!!!!

URGH. Anyways, it’s been a haaaard week with a loooot of stuff going on. THE WORLD IS GOING WAY TO FAST!!! Someone should totally go check the speed of the Earth. SOOOO, anyways, I decided (yes, yet again) that I kept going even when it was hard. Reasons: When I was doing my work I didn’t really just give up if I couldn’t do it or I didn’t get it. I just tried again and again to make it work…or get it correct.

So…we started the EXHIBITION. We’re all in groups of about 4, and we’re supposed to be with students from different classes who have the same interests as us. My group: Rites of Passage. We’re all working really hard and we’re trying to finish all of our research before the break ends….hope everyone did their job.

Anyways, to make this blog more….’fun’, every week I will post a Justgirlythings picture. And no, I will not tell you where I got it…!

Toodles!

What did I do? I checked over my own work!

by Stargirl on March 15, 2013

Hey peeps! This week, I decided that I checked my own work, because I usually read over my work after I finished it, to check if there’s any errors, mistakes etc. This is actually a good thing, because my mom keeps telling me to look over my work and editing it, like on the test, because I sometimes make a careless mistake, and I don’t check over it, then I get it wrong… But there isn’t much to talk about, so…..MOVING ON.

Sorry for the different shades of blue, I just feel like it today…ANYWAYS on Thursday it was Pi (Pie) day, so how did we celebrate it? NO, we did not do a bunch of math problems that had pi in it, because that would just be BORING. At lunch recess, there was the First Annual ‘Pie in the Eye’ celebration where students would smack pie/cream into the teacher’s faces. Well, how did the teachers get picked? There were a bunch of plastic containers in the lobby with slots for coins, so everyone voted for the teacher that they wanted to get ‘pie-d’. The 3 heaviest teacher’s containers would be the ones to get ‘pie-d’! The lucky (or unlucky) teachers were: Mr Hughes, the school principal; Mr MacPherson, Grade 6 team leader/6C teacher (and also my teacher in Grade 5); and last but not least Ms Kinsinger, the 6E teacher and choir teacher. I knew all of them, so it was fun to see them get pie-d!

After lunch, my class celebrated by eating pie! 7 of us brought in pies to share with the class. And now, I will announce the awesome people that brought in pies (including me :P ):

David – Apple pie

Alvin – Apple pie

Arthur – Chocolate pie

Julian – Chocolate pie

Sonia – Chocolate pie

Me – Coconut pie

Lizzy – Pork pies

Anyways, today I got a package on my dining table that had my name on it. There was a card and a gift wrapped in wrapping paper (well duh). But, why, do you ask, did I get it? Well, I had a feeling of what it was, because I kinda recognized the handwriting, but I opened the card to make sure. Yup, it was my BFF who lives in Canada, Arielle. She remembered my birthday and gave me: A long card, a Webkinz and 2 One Direction books! Yay! Thanks Arielle! But sadly, she’s not coming to visit this year.

Oooh ooh oooh ooh aaaaand, today is Pajama and Pancake day! Most of us wore our pajamas to school. Here’s a picture of the people in our class that wore pajamas:

“(Beatboxing) Oh Mickey you’re so fine, you’re so fine you blow my mind, hey Mickey, hey hey hey Mickey! Oh Mickey you’re so fine

And you’re mine. I’ll be your’s, ’till the end of time, cuz you make me feel, yeah you make me feel, so shiny and new. Like a virgin, touched for the very first time, like the

One in me, that’s OK, let’s see how you do it, put up your deuce, let’s get down to it, hit me with your best shot, why don’t you hit me with your best shot, hit me with your best shot, fire away!”

Who wants a fact?

I DO! I DO!

BYE!! (Sorry I ran out of facts….oh wait no – Did you know that the width of your arms stretched out (including part of your body) from the tip of your finger to the other finger, it actually how tall you are (but in width form)?

✰ I found resources for myself!! YAY! ✰

by Stargirl on March 8, 2013

✷ Hey guys, this week, I decided that I searched and found resources for myself. Here’s a reason why: when I was working on my summative, I didn’t ask anyone for any resources, I just found them myself. This is important because if you just keep on relying on other people to find resources for you, you won’t be able to find your own things when you grow up, because you’ll be on your own and maybe that person won’t be able to be there for you at that time. Also, if you never do things for yourself, and rely on others, you won’t grow up to be a very successful person. So if any of you out there always rely on your parents, family or friends….well, it’s not very good for you. Try to be independent and do things by yourself and rely on YOURSELF. ✷

☄ ANYWAYS, there really isn’t anything to talk about for the ‘Thinking about my learning”, so I’ll talk about some…other……….things…. ☄

This week, I decided that I….took time to read over my work!

I say this because whenever I finish my work, I take some time to read over it, to make sure that I didn’t write any wrong words, make a duplicate of the word or made a grammar mistake.

There isn’t much to write about that….BUT this week we did a lot of…interesting things I guess…? One thing that was interesting was getting little slips of questions, looking at a picture and answering the questions. In the end, we figured out that we were using A LOT of transdisciplinary skills while doing the exercise. I guess we just do it without realising!

Also, when we were practicing for World Maths Day, 6A became…..FIRST!!!!! We were really happy and we all took screenshots of it…here’s mine:

A week of…interesting-ness..and helping-ness!

by Stargirl on February 22, 2013

This week I think that I helped others. Firstly, whenever I go to the paper cutter, I will take out the cut paper that’s left there (if there’s any) and put it in the recycling bin. Also, yesterday when we were doing work on grammar, I helped not only my partner but also the other group sitting next to me, because they were all asking me….Then, when we were doing math work, I teamed up with the person sitting next to me to finish a complicated comparing fractions maze. Finally, today I donated money to Habitat for Humanity by wearing RED. Here’s my outfit:

Also, me and my friend are going to participate in an instrument contest (held by one of the students), so we’re working hard – ’cause it’s a duet! (AND it’s pretty hard)

Have a great weekend! :P :) :D

“I hopped off the plane at LAX with a dream in my cardigan, walked into the land of fame excess, am I gonna fit in? I jumped in the cab here I am for the first time, look to my right and I see the Hollywood sign, this is all so crazy, everybody seems so famous! My tummy’s turning and I’m feeling kinda homesick, too much pressure and I’m nervous. That’s when the taxi man turned on the radio, and the Jay-Z’s song was on, and the Jay-Z’s song was on, and the Jay-Z’s song was on! So I put my hands up, they’re playing my song, the butterflies fly away, nodding my head like yeah, moving my hips like yeah, put my hands up, they’re playing my song, I know I’m gonna be OK, yeah-eah-eah-eah, it’s a party in the USA, yeah-eah-eah-eah, it’s a party in the U-S-AA!”

And NO, not the wrong kind of peanut… :P

CNY

by Stargirl on February 6, 2013

HEYZ PEEPS!

So, the most – I guess – exciting thing that happened this week was the CNY performance. NO, not because people can watch us, NO, not because we can show off our awesome skills, NO, not because we get to miss parts of class BUT because of the experience. I mean, I have 3 PERFORMANCES IN A ROW. First: choir – I’m wearing my costume for the next act and I have this headdress, tons of makeup and I’m all sparkly – pretty noticeable. Then, I rush backstage for Chinese Dance. Ya, that’s pretty fine. But then, right after, I have to go around the back, take of my sleeves, pick up 2 identical pom-poms (blue especially because I want to… :)  ) then run out to dance with the teachers. And GUESS WHAT: On Wednesday we got dismissed late so I almost missed the bus! And, I was sweating like mad…urgh. Well anyways, hope I do well on the performance…’cause I’m TOTALLY leaving this place!

Fun Fact (not doing sick ones this time): Did you know that astronauts can’t whistle in space? …..Maybe it’s because the air is blocked….or there’s too little area in front of their face…but I don’t know. It’s just a true fact from Weird But True.

This week…

by Stargirl on February 1, 2013

We had a lot of work this week…

We wrote speeches for the exhibition (but they were our 1st drafts, so they weren’t THE best), the class debated on an article in the news about a lady texting then falling into a water fountain (I got to be one of the judges and it was pretty cool!), we worked on a fractions math menu, where you do activities based on fractions (but I thought it was pretty easy), and up to my 2 favourites….THE 100 DAY OF SCHOOL DANCE VIDEO AND DESIGNING OUR OWN AWESOME PUBLIC SPACE FOR G6s WITH OUR GROUP!!! I liked the dance because we got to go to different places and just randomly dance. When it was put into a video it looked really great! I also liked the public space designing because we got to put kinda ANYTHING WE WANT and when 2 of the boys drew it out it looked pretty good.

Fun Fact: NEVER put a popcorn machine in a random public space because that just sounds WRONG

Fun Fact #2: NEVER put a ‘d’ in front of an ‘ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww’ because in the end it’ll just sound bad and your parents might – um – kill you I guess – for saying it.

Answers to Questions for PE

by Stargirl on January 31, 2013

What does sportsmanship mean to you/look like to you? Give some examples.

Sportsmanship looks like people shaking hands after a game, not calling people cheaters after they lost the game, or calling the people who lost ‘losers’. It should look like congratulating the other team whether they won or lost, high-fiving them, and saying: ‘Good Game!’.

Why is it important to follow the rules of a game?

It is important to follow the rules of games because if we don’t, the game would get totally messed up. For example, if someone starts travelling in basketball, it would be way easier for that team. Also, it wouldn’t exactly be fair because then it would be harder for the other team to get the ball.

Why are good team strategies important to success in team games? Give examples of strategies for team handball?  How would you create and/or deny space in team handball?

What is a strategy you/your team used in “Capture the Flag” to be more successful?

In “Capture the Flag”, I try to communicate with my team, and keep running around to prevent the other team from running in/getting out with the ball.

Team strategies are important because if we don’t use them, then we wouldn’t really know what to do, and we wouldn’t be able to work together as a team properly.

You create space by moving around to an open space where people can throw to you and putting your hands up to catch the ball, making sure the thrower can throw to you and the opposing team won’t be able to intercept the ball.

You deny space by getting close to the thrower, blocking him/her so that you put pressure on him/her and it would be hard for him/her to pass to the teammates, blocking the people on the other team so that you can intercept the ball when it gets to them.

Describe why having strong skills helps your team be more successful? Give some examples of skills with a specific team sport in mind.

Having strong skills are important because without them, you wouldn’t be good at the game which leads to your team losing or you not being able to do much.

Describe why having strong skills helps your team be more successful? Give some examples of skills with a specific team sport in mind.

In soccer it is important to be good at the following skills…kicking, having good aim, stopping the ball with your foot,  blocking the goal, fake-pass, moving around so that you confuse your opponents and create and deny space.

Why does a team that is very physically fit have an advantage over a team that is not fit?

The team that is physically fit has an advantage(s) because if you’re not fit then you might be fat, so you will run really slowly. Also, it you’re not fit, you’ll get tired easily and that will slow down your whole team, making your team lose. If you’re fit, then you can run around without a care, being able to pass easily and you won’t get tired so easily.
