Grade 6 Showcase

Hi everyone,

Since grade 6 is done I have put all my important posts and some new ones on one new page just for grade 6.  I will also be using this blog for grade 7 so there will be some new posts next year.

My goals for this year:

1. Improve my public speaking skills.

This year, I have spoken at a few events.  One of these are the exhibition where we talked to different people about our issue.  We also interviewed strangers who had information that helped us with our investigation.  This year has helped me with public speaking because a lot of our summative assessments or tasks involved us speaking to strangers or speaking in front of a large group.

2. Use time more effectively.

This year, the tasks that the teachers have given us involved a lot of time and focus.  This has helped me use time effectively because the tasks took a lot of effort and time, but we didn’t have much time for a lot of tasks.  This year, we worked in groups a lot so it helped me with my communication skills and working effectively in a group.

Highlights of grade 6:

1. Basketball championships:

On Saturday, our basketball team had our final tournament of the year.  We are in a league called ISSFHK, which stands for international schools sports foundation.  In the boys tournament, there were 7 teams, and we beat all of them except HKIS, who we lost to in the first game and the final.  In our pool, we had HKIS, SIS, and VSA.  We lost to HKIS by 39 points :( !  Then we beat SIS by about 30 points, and beat VSA by about 40 points.  Then we went to the semi-finals, where we played CAIS.  It was a really close game, it was basically a one point game the whole way through.  Then, with no time left, Dean fouled a player, and he went to the line.  We were winning by one point, so if he missed both free throws, and WE WON!!!  After that, we were guaranteed a medal when we went to the final, where we lost by a lot against HKIS again.  This was the first ISSFHK basketball medal that I have ever gotten.  The girls also won a medal, but they got bronze.  They lost in the semi-final by one basket, ONE BASKET!  So they went into the third place game where they beat ICS.

2. Macao trip:

Last week, our grade went to Macau for our camp.  It was cool because we got to stay at a really nice hotel, the Westin.  We also got to go skating, bowling, and karaoke.  We also went to a lot of places in Macau:

  1. Leal Senado
  2. St. Dominic’s Church and Museum
  3. Façade and Crypt
  4. Macau Museum
  5. Monte Forte
  6. Old protestant cemetery
  7. Camoe’s Garden
  8. Coloane Island Hike
  9. Old Taipa Village
  10. House Museum
  11. Guia Lighthouse
  12. A-ma Temple
  13. Maritime Museum

My favorite place that we went to was the Coloane Island Hike because I’m a very athletic person and I like the outdoors.  My least favorite place was probably the Old protestant cemetery because we stayed there for a longer time and I got bored.

3. Track and field championships:

In May, we went down to the Aberdeen track for our annual track and field championships.  This event takes the whole day and is usually 30 degrees outside.  We run all of the events that are in a track meet for adults except the 3000m, the hammer throw, pole vault, and the hurdle events.  The age groups are under 12, 14, 16, and 20.  My age group is the under 12.  Instead of the 100m, in u12 we run the 60m.  I was in the 60m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m and the 4x400m.  I won gold in the 60m, gold in the 200m, silver in the 400m, gold in the 4x100m and gold in the 4x400m, that’s 4 golds and 1 silver.  I was really happy with myself because I have never won that many medals before and I also got personal bests in the 60 and the 200.

4. Exhibition:

Last week, we had our PYP exhibition.  We worked on this huge task for 6 WEEKS.  First, we chose an issue that we thought was relevant to our local region.  My group chose physical disabilities as our issue.  We first made research questions, which would guide us through our investigation.  Then we collected data about our issue.  After that, we looked at the data and analyzed it, which is finding themes.  After this, we drew conclusions and made connections, which led us to presenting findings.  During this exhibition, we also had a journal which we recorded most of our work and reflections of our learning.

5. Hong Kong – Bangkok Cup:
Every year, we have a competition with a school in Bangkok called the Bangkok Patana School.  This year, the competition was in Bangkok, so we went there for 4 days with 30 athletes, competing in swimming, track and field, soccer and basketball.  The first day, we didn’t play any sports, we just rested in our hotel.  The second day, we went to the hotel pool and swam for a couple of hours, then we went to the Patana sports center to play soccer.  We lost soccer big time, 5-0.  The next day, we went swimming and running.  I swam 3 events, the 50 breaststroke, 50 free, and the 100 free.  I came 3rd in the 50 breaststroke, 4th in the 50 free, and 5th in the 100 free.  I ran 4 events, the 100m, the 400m, the 2×200 relay, and the 4×100 relay.  I came 3rd in the 100m, 4th in the 400m, 3rd in the 2x200m, and 3rd in the 4x100m relay.  The last day we played basketball.  The girls won 22-18 and the boys also won 42-30.  Overall, it was a successful tournament for both us and Patana.
