After discussing the similarities and differences of the eras, genres, and composers, it’s finally time to distinguish the two links of the Rondo Alla Turca and Hungarian Rhapsody No.2. I went on IMSLP to download the free music sheets of both pieces and started to see if they had any major links. The two links I discovered are that they are both homophonic pieces and that they’re both ternary forms (ABA). This part of the project took me quite a while as the links weren’t very obvious and I had to listen to both pieces many many times (like, 50 times at least) and look at the pieces while listening to the song. I then looked into each category of rhythm, melody, forms, textures, etc to see what I can come up with in those pieces. I have to say that this was the most difficult part of the project.

For the MLI, the main point of this project is to distinguish the difference and similarities between the two genres, eras and musical pieces. I did some research on this and used some of the worksheets we worked on during the History unit to complete this part of the music links investigation. I’m glad I completed all the worksheets that were handed out to us because it was actually quite useful when I had to distinguish the similarities and differences of the genres and eras of the Classical and Romantic periods.

There are many options on how to show our MLI work. In order to keep the readers interested and engaged, you’ll have to have a nice title or cover page to intrigue them. I’ve decided to create a website so it’s more entertaining and a more self-engaging activity as they can choose to read whatever they want. A website is also more convenient and less messy. I’ve decided to use webs.com as my domain creator because it’s easy to follow and there is no html coding required. There are a variety of themes and styles to choose from which is good because this will be easy for me to create a musical theme that suits my topic.

As you can see in the picture, I’ve already started on my introduction of the project on the home page of my site so everyone who clicks on the link can see what the purpose of the project is right away.

I’ve also added the music tracks onto the homepage so people can listen while they read about it.

In order to work on this MLI, I’ll have to first choose which two eras, genres I would like to investigate. I think I’ll choose the Classical and Romantic era to investigate on since there are more famous composers in these two eras and I personally feel that the music in these two eras are more appealing to the ear. There are several famous composers from the Classical era such as, Franz Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Antonio Salieri, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Muzio Clementi, Luigi Boccherini, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, and Ludwig van Beethoven. Out of the the 8 composers, there are three that I am most familiar with. I’ve heard Mozart, Bach and Beethoven’s pieces the most throughout my childhood when my parents would play classical music at home. I’ve decided to further investigate into Mozart’s music and choose one of his songs to work on. As for the Romantic Era composer, I’ve decided to delve into Liszt’s music as he was one of the few that popped up on the first page of Google.

The song choices I’ll be linking each other to are Rondo Alla Turca by Mozart, and the Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 from Frank Liszt. They sound interesting to me and both are contrasting pieces but I think I’ll be able to discover some links when I’m further into my project.

I’ve learned a lot throughout this history unit. From the very first Middle Ages to the Romantic Era, music has developed in many different ways. I’m surprised how different things are right now in the 21st century but also at the same time, the old rules still applies in music we listen to today.

This is a remix piece I found that is relevant to the Classical Era (1750 – 1820). It is a dubstep remix that I found of Für Elise from Beethoven.

The most interesting thing I found about this unit was how the impact of the invention of the printing press had on music. Without the printng press, we wouldn’t be able to have copies of sheet music to play with on a daily basis. Music printing had a major effect on how music spread for not only did a printed piece of music reach a larger audience, it did it far cheaper as well.

Did you use feedback from peers during the creative process? Give examples of when you did this.

I only received some feedback from a few friends while I was working on it during the weekend. I didn’t know how to start the B section of my song because I ran out of creativity juice. So I decided to share what I had so far with my friend and she said that I should end the imperfect cadence with a soft note and go decrescendo on it, then when I get into the B section I should include a few accented sixteen notes to surprise the listeners. I tried what she suggested but I ended up having an anticipation in the first bar of B section because I felt like if it was really random to speed up the B section 5 times as fast as the A section. It would feel like the B section didn’t belong there. Therefore, I began with an anticipation then slowly and gradually sped it up with a bunch of sixteen notes.

this is the anticipation right when B starts. I’ve also made it mezzo forte so it would create a thicker tone.

Did you evaluate your work against the marking criteria? Give examples of when you did this.

I did not specifically evaluate my work against the marking criteria but I did look at the task specifics and completed them. I only aimed for the 7-8 level because I didn’t want to get my hopes down after finishing the final product. I looked at the requirements for a 7-8 then afterwards when I was finally done with my product, I compared it to the level requirement once again just to make sure that I had all the tasks done.

Did you reflect critically on your work during the creative process? Give examples of how you responded to your own reflection.

I did some critical reflection during the creative process. I had posted a few entries on my wordpress to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of my progress and what difficulties I had to deal with. I also reflected on the instrumentations of having a drum beat in the background and how it would change the whole mood and take it to a different level.

This is my final product of the ternary composition. I am quite satisfied with what I created because it actually sounds like a song. What I didn’t realize was that I didn’t change the concert pitch of the alto saxophone so when I did, some of the notes were out of the instrument’s range. I had to change some of the notes and move them down an octave so it would be suitable for the saxophones to play. Also, when the concert pitch changes, everything adjusts a bit so some of the labels were out of place and I had to remove everything to match all the correct notes. I checked a few times to see if they were matching but I’m still not 100% sure that I have everything in place due to the different concert pitch notes. I ended up not adding a drum beat to the song because I figured I’d just leave it as a duet composition with the alto sax and piano. I felt like the song would sound out of place with a drum beat in the background.
