Post-Scales Reflection

by 011966 on 25/05/2013

After receiving my scales marks, I think I could have done better; I think my memorization of the scales was good, although I could have improved much more when performing the arpeggios. The arpeggios really set me back; It took my a long time to figure out the 1, 3, 5 chords of the scale and was one of the main reasons my marks dropped. I also think I could have improved in consistency, I need to ensure I play all my scales at the same speed instead of playing quickly on the ones I favor and slowly on the ones less preferred.

Semester 2 Reflection

by 011966 on 25/05/2013

How did you develop during this first semester year?

I think I have developed a sense of beat, because after looking at the conductor once, I am able to remember the beat and tap it out with my foot to maintain consistency in rhythm. Not only, but I have developed well in particular parts of theory, mainly in Intervals and Inversions. I think those are the easiest concepts in theory.

What could you do to enable better development for yourself?

To better develop myself, I should set deadlines, for example, if I was to complete a worksheet, I would set a date for it. This way, I would not procrastinate and perhaps progress at a consistent rate. I should also practice at a similar rate, and instead of practising a lot and then a little, I should practise an average amount every day. I think one of the reasons my development was hindered is my drum exam because I had to dedicate some of my time to practising exam pieces and rudiments.

I should also dedicate more time to practing scales and adding to arpreggios.

Did you succeed in any of your goals from half way through the semester?

I was unable to succeed in reaching my goals for Aquallegro because due to technical difficulties, I was not able to do any Aquallegro of any sorts. What is your goal for the rest of the year/improve goals?

My goal for the rest of the year is to achieve 80% or higher on later tests. After receiving my test mark for theory during this semester, I was very disappointed with how I did and I hope to improve and I will strive for a higher mark in the future. I will do this by completing theory worksheets more regularly and perhaps reading more through online sources to gain background information. I will also start having earlier preparation in the future.

4/3/13 – Labeling/Printing/Uploading

March 4, 2013

After everything was complete, I had to label all the non-chord tones, cadences, and chords that I had used. Reading the instructions, I labeled the chords, the non-chord tones, dynamics, tempo-changes, and other things I added to my music. But, I was unable to upload it because one of my clefs were muted, and I [...]

3/3/13 – Clarinet/Accompaniment Chords

March 3, 2013

Since the melodic part was complete, I started with the clarinet part of the song. I kept it in treble clef since the instrument list did not provide bass clarinet. I tested multiple chords, and used them to harmonize with the piano part. I didn’t have perfect cadences and plagals on the clarinet, because I [...]

1/3/13 – Melodic Piano Part

March 1, 2013

Today I started with the treble clef (melody) of the song. I attempted to add as many non-chord tones in the song to complete the requirements of the song, and to create a melody then add chords at the very end to make the song sound as lively as possible. With the melody in place, [...]

27/2/13 – Pre-Creation Research

February 27, 2013

Until today, I still haven’t really started my music composition. I was looking at the instructions, and searching up words I did not understand. Examples would be plagal, cadences, RET, ANT, etc… After learning more about them and bookmarking some helpful websites, I went to the piano to find some chords that worked well. I [...]

Escape Tones

January 15, 2013

An escape tone, is extremely similar to an unaccented neighbour tone. Firstly, we would start off with a note, and naturally, the note would go up by one tone. Afterwards, the next note, instead of dropping by one tone, will drop by two tones. This is called a skip. When put into context, it would [...]
