Cilaine:

To what extent should parents have control over their children?

I think that parents should have control over their children however, they should also let them have a little freedom. If children were told what to do and what not to do 24/7, they would not be very independent and their life would be very boring. However, if te parents don’t control their children a little, they may do illegal things or something bad.

Halle:

Which should be accepted: change or tradition?

I think that both change and tradition should be accepted because everyone has the right to choose follow their old traditions and to change or not. However, I think that change is better because if we change more, then we may discover new things which could help the world.

Neo-Nazis jailed over anti-Jewish internet posts

A BBC News article.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10413611    <— picture is in there I don’t know how to insert to blog :/

Summary

Two white supremacists, Michael Heaton, 42, of Leigh, Greater Manchester, and Trevor Hannington, 58, from Hirwaun, were jailed for posting Anti-Jewish internet posts. These two men, has described the jews as “scum” and encouraged people to kill them. They have posted 3,000 messages on his ASF website between January and June 2008. In one of the messages he posted, He wrote: “I would encourage any religion or race that wants to destroy the Jews, I hate them with a passion.” In another post he said Jews were “leeches” and “scum” and that black people were “less intelligent than other species”. They claimed themselves as neo-Nazis and both of them were cleared of soliciting murder. Heaton was convicted of stirring up racial hatred – a charge Hannington admitted. Heaton was jailed for 30 months and Hannington was jailed for 2 years.

Making Connections

The Merchant of Venice and the article relates to each other in a few ways. The most significant one is the racism. Back in the play, it shows that people at that time were racist to jewish people as shown by Antonio. In the article, the two men posted 3,000 racist messages about jews. As you can see, the issue is still going on around now.

In the Merchant of Venice play, Antonio is a character who is racist against the jews. For example, In Act 1, Shylock talks about Antonio calling him names and being racist against him. “You call me misbeliever, cut-throat dog, And spit upon my Jewish gaberdine, And all for use of that which is mine own.” (i,iii,106). This shows that Antonio was being racist because he called him names and spat on him just because he is jewish. This relates to the article from BBC because in the article, the two men called jews names also and they wanted to get rid of them. One of the things he posted was “I would encourage any religion or race that wants to destroy the Jews, I hate them with a passion.” In another post he said Jews were “leeches” and “scum”. This proves the hatred of these two men towards jews and it definitely relates to the racism Antonio showed in the Merchant of Venice.

Question
